flux-topology

flux-topology is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from seppaleinen/flux-topology-mcp. It costs 31 tokens per session (704 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository map for FluxCD, a tool that keeps Kubernetes applications in sync from Git. It builds a graph showing applications, shared resources, and their relationships.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to explore applications, trace dependencies, find shared-resource references, check possible impact, and review topology changes.
Why use it?
It helps you understand an unfamiliar GitOps repository and see what could be affected before changing or removing an application.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00031 $0.00704
Opus 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00282
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00141
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00070

Security

Grade A, and why

flux-topology scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

flux-topology

A CLI + skill that builds a dependency and topology graph of a FluxCD GitOps repository by static analysis.

When to use

  • Debugging or exploring a FluxCD/Kubernetes GitOps repo
  • Understanding blast radius before deleting or modifying an app
  • Finding all references to a shared resource (Helm chart, image, config)
  • Onboarding to an unfamiliar Flux repository
  • Reviewing topology changes in a PR

Prerequisites

pip install flux-topology
npx skills add seppaleinen/flux-topology-mcp # this skill

No MCP server is required — flux-topology is a plain CLI.

READ FIRST (no binary needed)

Prefer the cache files directly — they are greppable and cheap:

  1. .fluxtop/apps/*.md — one human-readable markdown card per App (workloads, services, ingress hosts, depends-on/referenced-by, warnings). Grep or open these for per-app detail.
  2. .fluxtop/wiring.json — the machine-readable graph. Use targeted jq queries (e.g. jq '.apps[].id' .fluxtop/wiring.json) as needed. NEVER dump the whole file — it is large and expensive.

Computed queries (binary)

Use the CLI only for queries that need computation over the whole graph:

Command Purpose
flux-topology map Overview: domains, hub apps by edge count, warnings
flux-topology trace <app> BFS blast radius with typed edges
flux-topology find-refs <pattern> Regex search for references across all apps
flux-topology app-card <app> Full card for one app
flux-topology check-freshness Check if the cache is fresh/stale/absent (never rebuilds)

Trace options: --direction out|in|both (default out) and --depth N (default 5). All commands accept [dir] (default .) and --json for machine-readable output.

Build on change

flux-topology build [dir] [--force]

Run build when the repo was moved, after YAML changes, or when a STALE notice appears. Query commands auto-build only when there is no cache at all; a STALE cache is surfaced as a notice with exit code 1 — rebuild before trusting the results.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
