show-rules

show-rules is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from sfc-gh-myoung/ai_coding_rules. It costs 29 tokens per session (520 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A diagnostic command that displays which instruction rules are currently loaded for a session.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when debugging session behaviour or verifying the foundation and domain rules selected for a request.
Why use it?
It makes hidden rule selection visible, so you can check whether the expected rules were injected and matched.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00029 $0.00520
Opus 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00208
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00104
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00052

Security

Grade A, and why

show-rules scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 20d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

show-rules

User-invocable skill: $show-rules

Purpose

Display the PRE-FLIGHT diagnostic block showing which rules are currently loaded for this session. This is useful for debugging rule matching, verifying that the correct domain rules were selected, and confirming foundation rule versions.

Use this skill when

  • Triggered explicitly by the user via $show-rules
  • Used during debugging to inspect which rules the hook injected

Output Format

When invoked, output the full PRE-FLIGHT block:

PRE-FLIGHT:
- [x] Gate 1: Foundation <path>/rules/000-global-core.md - vX.Y.Z
- [x] Gate 2: Manifest provided (hook injection)
- [x] Gate 3: +N domain rule(s):
  - <path>/rules/<name>.md (<reason>) - vX.Y.Z
  (or: none matched)

Task Switch: [FIRST | NO | YES (reason)]

Instructions

  1. List all rules that were injected by the hook in the current system context (from the ## Matched Rules for This Request section).
  2. For each rule, read it to obtain the rule_version from frontmatter.
  3. Render each matched rule using the path form present in the hook-injected context: use absolute plugin paths when the injected absolute-path list is non-empty; use rules/<name>.md relative form in a repo-root workflow or when no injected absolute path exists. Join match reasons to paths by filename, not by list position. Apply markdown-safe rendering to any path containing markdown-significant characters: backslash, |, *, _, [, ], and backtick.
  4. Format the PRE-FLIGHT block with accurate Gate 3 entries.
  5. If no rules were matched, report none matched under Gate 3.

Notes

  • This skill only produces diagnostic output. It does not modify files or execute tasks.
  • The PRE-FLIGHT block is not shown by default in normal responses: it is only emitted when this skill is invoked or when explicitly requested by an eval harness.

Version History

  • 1.0.1: Added canonical skill metadata and section naming while preserving the explicit diagnostic-only trigger and path-rendering contract.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

show-rules is a skill published in the GitHub repository sfc-gh-myoung/ai_coding_rules (8 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 29 tokens to every session and 520 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-10.
