handoff

handoff is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from sgaabdu4/hard-eng. It costs 23 tokens per session (405 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for writing or continuing a short session handoff, a record that lets another session resume coding work with the needed context. It stores the handoff in HANDOFF.md at the repository root.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to record the current goal, repository state, completed checks, known unknowns, and the first next step for a fresh session.
Why use it?
It prevents important facts, verification results, unanswered requests, and next steps from being lost when a session ends or changes.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for Claude Code and Codex: disable-model-invocation in frontmatter, but also agents/openai.yaml present.

Good fit Use it to record the current goal, repository state, completed checks, known unknowns, and the first next step for a fresh session.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.00405
Opus 5 $0.00012 $0.00202
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00081
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00040

Security

Grade A, and why

handoff scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Handoff

Contract

  • Owner file = HANDOFF.md at repository root; no repository → current working directory; one file + overwrite; handoff history forbidden.
  • Content = observed session facts only; invention/padding forbidden; unknown = recorded Unknown.
  • Secrets/credentials/tokens = excluded; record storage location pointer instead.
  • Handoff = context for the next session; current user message wins on conflict.

Route

State Action Completion
Active session with work to transfer Write per template.md Every section filled or explicit None + fresh-reader validation PASS + path reported
Fresh session + HANDOFF.md exists Resume per resume.md Verified state summary reported + first Next step started
Fresh session + no HANDOFF.md Report absence → ask for path or scope User answer

Write

  • Timing = before close/compaction; sending session writes; reconstruction from memory forbidden.
  • Scan = full conversation + git state + task/plan state + verification receipts + unanswered user asks.
  • Arguments = next-session focus; tailor Goal + Next to it.
  • Terse = fact-dense bullets; narrative/history prose forbidden.
  • Artifact-backed fact (brief | plan | ADR | issue | PR | commit | diff | doc) = pointer + one-line gist; duplication forbidden.
  • Conversation-only fact (user ask | correction | constraint | preference | finding) = inlined in full; it dies with the session.
  • Fresh-reader validation = re-read written file; any bullet needing conversation access to act on → rewrite; conversation-only shorthand/pronouns forbidden.
Files

What ships with it

3 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

handoff is a skill published in the GitHub repository sgaabdu4/hard-eng (5 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 405 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
