reviving-sessions

reviving-sessions is a skill for Claude Code from shaharsha/claude-skills. It costs 221 tokens per session (4,935 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A workflow for finding and restoring Claude Code sessions that exist on disk but are missing from the Claude desktop app. It covers sessions started from shells, scripts, other clients, or accounts, as well as sessions whose names or transcripts are difficult to access.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to locate, inspect, contact, rename, or archive missing Claude Code sessions and to recover sessions after a worktree or client change.
Why use it?
It helps recover work when a session is absent from the desktop session list or was renamed incorrectly. It also distinguishes sessions the app can contact from transcripts that must be recovered from disk.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00221 $0.04935
Opus 5.5 $0.00088 $0.01974
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00044 $0.00987
Haiku 4.5 $0.00022 $0.00494

Security

Grade B, and why

reviving-sessions scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 320 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Reviving sessions

The desktop app's session tools — list_sessions, send_message, list_events, search_session_transcripts, start_session, set_session_title, archive_session — cover every session the app has indexed. This skill is for the ones it has not: sessions created outside it (claude -p, the VS Code extension, another account), transcripts stranded on disk, and transcripts too large or too old for its tools. It also covers the renames those tools get wrong on indexed sessions: one that silently changes nothing, or lands in only one account.

🔴 A session the app lists and is running: ask it, don't read it. Send it a message (mcp__ccd_session_mgmt__send_message, its local_… id from list_sessions) and wait for the reply. A transcript is mostly tool-call stubs, and reading it is your guess at its state; its own answer is its current view. (Shahar, 2026-10-20: "contact it, don't read its transcripts.") Looking up a running session's title or transcript id in the ccread listing is fine; reading its conversation to learn its state is not.

When to use

  • A session is on disk but missing from the desktop sidebar, or a client shows sessions another does not
  • A session vanished after its worktree was deleted or it changed directory
  • You start a session from a shell and need it to appear, named, in the desktop app
  • A rename fails, silently does nothing, or differs between two accounts
  • A session has ended, or the app does not have it, and you need what it said or decided

Not for: routine work on a session the app already lists — message, read, rename, start or archive it with the app's tools. A rename that fails or differs between accounts is still this skill. Not for reading your own conversation, or grepping code.

First: is the app really missing it?

1 list_sessions <- ALWAYS start here
2 find it by cwd + title + isRunning, and use the local_… id EXACTLY AS LISTED
3 ONLY if it is genuinely absent from that listing: adopt it (below)
4 VERIFY in list_sessions, never from a tool's return value

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
