openviking

openviking is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from shpaw415/openviking-grok-plugin. It costs 51 tokens per session (708 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

An add-on that lets AI agents use OpenViking, a context database organized like a virtual file system for memories, resources, and skills.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to recall memories, preferences, and project knowledge, search code or files, ingest resources, and manage stored context through OpenViking.
Why use it?
It gives agents ways to find, read, store, and search project context across conversations.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.00708
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00354
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00142
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00071

Security

Grade A, and why

openviking scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

OpenViking for Grok

OpenViking is a context database for AI agents. It exposes memories, resources, and skills under the viking:// virtual filesystem. This plugin starts a local stdio MCP proxy that talks to your OpenViking server using ~/.openviking/ovcli.conf (or OPENVIKING_* env vars).

When to use which tool

Discover tools with search_tool (query: "openviking"), then call them with use_tool.

Goal Tool
Health / connectivity openviking__health
Semantic search (fast) openviking__find
Semantic search (deep, session-aware) openviking__search
Typed memory recall (events, prefs, entities) openviking__recall
Store facts / preferences openviking__remember
List a directory openviking__list
Read full file(s) openviking__read
Filename glob openviking__glob
Exact text / regex openviking__grep
Code symbols openviking__code_search, openviking__code_outline, openviking__code_expand
Ingest URL or local file openviking__add_resource
Delete a URI openviking__forget (irreversible — confirm first)

Typical flows

Recall before answering about past work

  1. openviking__recall with a short query about the topic.
  2. If scores are weak, fall back to openviking__find / openviking__search.
  3. Expand promising URIs with openviking__read or openviking__list.

Remember something the user cares about

  1. Call openviking__remember with a short user/assistant message pair that states the fact clearly.
  2. Extraction into long-term memory is asynchronous — do not expect immediate semantic hits.

Browse indexed resources

  1. openviking__list on viking://resources or a known subtree.
  2. Prefer L0/L1 abstracts first; only read full L2 content when needed.

Configuration

Credentials never go in Grok config.toml. The proxy resolves (highest first):

  1. OPENVIKING_URL, OPENVIKING_API_KEY, OPENVIKING_ACCOUNT, OPENVIKING_USER
  2. ~/.openviking/ovcli.conf
  3. ~/.openviking/ov.conf (legacy)
  4. Default http://127.0.0.1:1933 (local, no auth)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

openviking is a skill published in the GitHub repository shpaw415/openviking-grok-plugin (0 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 708 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
