beautiful-mermaid

beautiful-mermaid is a skill for Claude Code from SSBun/csl-agent-kit. It costs 55 tokens per session (577 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A renderer for Mermaid diagrams, which are diagrams written as text, producing SVG files or ASCII output. It supports flowcharts, sequence diagrams, state diagrams, class diagrams, database relationship diagrams, and charts, with built-in themes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to render software flows, request sequences, state changes, class structures, database relationships, and XY charts as SVG or terminal-friendly ASCII.
Why use it?
It turns text-based diagram definitions into visuals that can be viewed or shared. The theme options help keep rendered diagrams consistent with a project's presentation style.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.00577
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00289
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00115
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00058

Security

Grade A, and why

beautiful-mermaid scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Preflight

Before rendering, verify the CLI dependency is available:

node -e "require('beautiful-mermaid'); console.log('ok')"

If that fails, ask the user before installing globally. Explain that this installs the beautiful-mermaid package on their system via npm:

npm install -g beautiful-mermaid

If the user declines installation, stop. Do not proceed with inline render scripts until preflight passes.

Setup

Use via inline Node scripts. The library exposes two main functions:

  • renderMermaidSVG(mermaidCode) — returns SVG string synchronously
  • renderMermaidASCII(mermaidCode) — returns ASCII art string

Usage

Create a temp Node script to render diagrams:

const { renderMermaidSVG, renderMermaidASCII } = require('beautiful-mermaid')

const diagram = `graph TD
  A[Start] --> B{Decision}
  B -->|Yes| C[OK]
  B -->|No| D[End]`

const svg = renderMermaidSVG(diagram)
console.log(svg)

Run with node <file>.

Theming

Pass theme options as second argument:

renderMermaidSVG(code, { theme: 'tokyo-night' })
renderMermaidSVG(code, { bg: '#1e1e2e', fg: '#cdd6f4' })

Built-in themes: tokyo-night, catppuccin, nord, dracula, github, solarized, and more (15 total).

Minimal config: just bg and fg — rest derived via CSS color-mix().

For terminals, use ASCII rendering:

const ascii = renderMermaidASCII(code)
console.log(ascii)

Output handling

SVG output can be saved to file:

const fs = require('fs')
fs.writeFileSync('diagram.svg', svg)

Then display to user or reference the file path.

Supported diagram types

Type Mermaid syntax
Flowchart graph TD, graph LR, graph RL
State diagram stateDiagram-v2
Sequence diagram sequenceDiagram
Class diagram classDiagram
ER diagram erDiagram
XY Chart xychart (bar, line, combined)
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
