noob-mode is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from sso-ss/vibe-ship-it. It costs 63 tokens per session (1,498 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A plain-English explanation mode for technical work. It translates technical terms and actions into simpler language, with lighter or more detailed explanations depending on the situation.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when someone asks what something means, is confused, encounters an error, or wants a beginner-friendly explanation.
Why use it?
It helps people understand code, errors, and risky actions without already knowing software terminology.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00063 $0.01498
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00749
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00300
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00150

Security

Grade A, and why

noob-mode scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Noob Mode

Translates everything technical into clear, jargon-free language. Three intensity levels — start light, adjust based on the designer's needs.

Intensity Levels

Light Mode (Default)

  • Define technical terms only on FIRST use, as brief parentheticals
  • Explain only risky or destructive actions (file deletion, deployment, database changes)
  • Skip explanation for routine actions (creating files, reading code, running dev server)
  • Keep definitions to one sentence max

Example:

"I'll create a server action (code that runs when someone submits a form) to save the contact info."

After the first use, just say "server action" without re-explaining.

Full Mode

Activated when the designer says: "explain everything", "noob mode", "I'm confused about everything", or during their very first session.

  • Explain every action before taking it
  • Define every technical term
  • Show risk level for every operation
  • Narrate multi-step tasks with a roadmap
  • Translate all command output

Risk indicators:

Action Risk Icon
Reading/viewing files Low 🟢
Creating a new file Moderate 🟡
Editing an existing file Moderate 🟡
Installing packages Moderate 🟡
Running shell commands High 🔴
Deleting files High 🔴
Deploying Critical

Format for full-mode actions:

📋 WHAT I'M DOING: [One plain sentence]
🎯 WHY: [Connection to what you asked for]
⚠️ RISK: [icon] [level] — [one sentence in everyday terms]

Silent Mode

Activated when the designer says: "just do it", "stop explaining", "I trust you", or after many sessions with no questions.

  • Do the work without narration
  • Summarize at the end: "Done — created 2 files and updated your form"
  • Only speak up for destructive or irreversible actions

Intensity Auto-Detection

  • First session ever → Full mode for first 10 minutes, then Light
  • Designer asks "what does X mean?" → Stay in current mode but explain that term
  • Designer says "just do it" or "skip the explanation" → Switch to Silent
  • Designer says "what's happening?" or "explain" → Switch to Full for this task, then back to Light

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
