recalculate_and_validate_formula_workbooks

recalculate_and_validate_formula_workbooks is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Stahl-G/briefloop. It costs 31 tokens per session (592 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A spreadsheet workflow for editing formulas in Excel workbooks and checking that their saved results are correct. Cached results are the values stored in a workbook for programs that read results without recalculating formulas.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding, replacing, or filling formulas in XLSX files, especially when another program will read the calculated values.
Why use it?
It prevents a workbook from containing correct-looking formula text but stale or missing displayed values.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00031 $0.00592
Opus 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00237
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00006 $0.00118
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00059

Security

Grade A, and why

recalculate_and_validate_formula_workbooks scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

When to Apply

Apply this workflow whenever the task inserts, replaces, or fills formulas, especially when the evaluator may read cached values with data_only=True, the workbook uses dynamic arrays or structured references, or the requested result depends on displayed text, locale, or numeric type.

When NOT to Apply

Do not add a recalculation cycle for purely literal edits or formatting-only tasks with no formula-dependent target cells. Still preserve the original workbook structure and validate the exact requested range.

Instructions

  1. Inspect the source workbook, target range, neighboring formulas, and the final requirement. Determine whether each target must be a number, text, blank, Boolean, or error label. Derive criteria from the final requirement and target layout; do not inherit contextual filters that the requested result does not require.

  2. Prefer formulas that the available recalculator supports. If a dynamic-array formula or structured reference produces a blank/error cache, replace it with a compatible classic formula, helper-cell approach, or static result only when the task does not require a formula. Do not treat fullCalcOnLoad flags as proof that values were calculated.

  3. Avoid locale-dependent output when the requested text is fixed. For example, use an explicit mapping such as CHOOSE(WEEKDAY(date,2),"Mon","Tue","Wed","Thu","Fri","Sat","Sun") for English weekday labels instead of relying on localized TEXT output. If the requested result is text, concatenate it explicitly; a number format suffix does not change a numeric cell into text.

  4. Save the edited workbook, enable automatic/full calculation, and recalculate it with the permitted headless spreadsheet engine into a workspace-local temporary directory and isolated user profile. Require the converted file to exist, then copy or move that converted file over the exact final output path. Never deliver the pre-recalculation workbook while inspecting only a temporary copy.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

recalculate_and_validate_formula_workbooks is a skill published in the GitHub repository Stahl-G/briefloop (9 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 31 tokens to every session and 592 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-12.
