api-and-interface-design

api-and-interface-design is a skill for Claude Code from STELIORD/agentic-awesome-skills. It costs 49 tokens per session (2,420 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of api-and-interface-design, MIT.

A guide to designing stable interfaces between software components, such as REST or GraphQL APIs, modules, and UI components. It focuses on clear contracts that are difficult to misuse.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for creating or changing API endpoints, module boundaries, component properties, and database structures that shape an API.
Why use it?
It helps prevent accidental dependencies on undocumented behavior and makes future changes safer. It also encourages planning for deprecation, which means retiring an old interface gradually.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00049 $0.02420
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.01210
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00484
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00242

Security

Grade A, and why

api-and-interface-design scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

API and Interface Design

Overview

Design stable, well-documented interfaces that are hard to misuse. Good interfaces make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard. This applies to REST APIs, GraphQL schemas, module boundaries, component props, and any surface where one piece of code talks to another.

When to Use

  • Designing new API endpoints
  • Defining module boundaries or contracts between teams
  • Creating component prop interfaces
  • Establishing database schema that informs API shape
  • Changing existing public interfaces

Core Principles

Hyrum's Law

With a sufficient number of users of an API, all observable behaviors of your system will be depended on by somebody, regardless of what you promise in the contract.

This means: every public behavior — including undocumented quirks, error message text, timing, and ordering — becomes a de facto contract once users depend on it. Design implications:

  • Be intentional about what you expose. Every observable behavior is a potential commitment.
  • Don't leak implementation details. If users can observe it, they will depend on it.
  • Plan for deprecation at design time. See deprecation-and-migration for how to safely remove things users depend on.
  • Tests are not enough. Even with perfect contract tests, Hyrum's Law means "safe" changes can break real users who depend on undocumented behavior.

The One-Version Rule

Avoid forcing consumers to choose between multiple versions of the same dependency or API. Diamond dependency problems arise when different consumers need different versions of the same thing. Design for a world where only one version exists at a time — extend rather than fork.

1. Contract First

Define the interface before implementing it. The contract is the spec — implementation follows.

// Define the contract first
interface TaskAPI {
  // Creates a task and returns the created task with server-generated fields
  createTask(input: CreateTaskInput): Promise<Task>;

  // Returns paginated tasks matching filters
  listTasks(params: ListTasksParams): Promise<PaginatedResult<Task>>;

  // Returns a single task or throws NotFoundError
  getTask(id: string): Promise<Task>;

  // Partial update — only provided fields change
  updateTask(id: string, input: UpdateTaskInput): Promise<Task>;

  // Idempotent delete — succeeds even if already deleted
  deleteTask(id: string): Promise<void>;
}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
