knowledge-bank

knowledge-bank is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from stilero/claude-plugins. It costs 111 tokens per session (2,738 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for using a project’s persistent knowledge bank: a folder of indexed Markdown notes that remains with the repository between coding sessions. It supports notes such as decisions, lessons learned, background context, and session summaries.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to initialise the knowledge bank, save notes or architecture decisions, and search or recall information about the project.
Why use it?
It keeps important discoveries and technical decisions from being lost when a session ends or another agent starts work.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00111 $0.02738
Opus 5 $0.00056 $0.01369
Sonnet 5 $0.00022 $0.00548
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00274

Measured 4d ago against content hash 66d08b72dae9, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

knowledge-bank scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Knowledge Bank Skill

Overview

The knowledge bank is a .knowledge-bank/ directory inside the repo. It stores markdown files organized by category, indexed for fast lookups. It survives between Claude sessions and is committed to git alongside code.

Categories:

  • adr/ — Architecture Decision Records (ADR-NNNN-title format)
  • learnings/ — Lessons learned, discoveries, gotchas
  • decisions/ — Technical decisions (lighter-weight than ADRs)
  • context/ — Background info, domain knowledge, system explanations
  • sessions/ — Per-session summaries auto-captured at end of session

Index system: Every write updates .knowledge-bank/INDEX.md with a single-line comment entry per record. This allows instant grep-based search across thousands of files without reading them all.

Step 1: Determine the Operation

Read $ARGUMENTS or the conversation context and classify the request as one of:

  • init — User wants to set up the knowledge bank in this repo for the first time
  • store — User wants to save a learning, decision, or context note
  • adr — User wants to create a formal Architecture Decision Record
  • recall — User wants to search or retrieve knowledge
  • list — User wants to see recent or category-filtered entries
  • session — End-of-session capture (store a summary of this session's key learnings)

Then jump to the matching step below.

Step 2a: INIT — Initialize the Knowledge Bank

When: User runs /kb-init or says "set up the knowledge bank".

  1. Check if .knowledge-bank/ already exists with the Read or Glob tool.

    • If it exists, inform the user and skip to the CLAUDE.md update check (step 2a-4).
  2. Create the directory structure using the Bash tool:

    mkdir -p .knowledge-bank/{adr,learnings,decisions,context,sessions}

  3. Create .knowledge-bank/INDEX.md with this exact content:

    # Knowledge Bank Index

This file is the master index for `.knowledge-bank/`. Each entry is a single-line HTML
comment in a grep-friendly format. Never edit entries manually — use the kb commands.

    Search examples:
    - All ADRs: `grep 'category=adr' .knowledge-bank/INDEX.md`
    - By tag: `grep 'tags=.*auth' .knowledge-bank/INDEX.md`
    - By keyword in title: `grep -i 'title=.*cache' .knowledge-bank/INDEX.md`
    - Recent entries: `tail -20 .knowledge-bank/INDEX.md`

    ## Entries

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

knowledge-bank is a skill published in the GitHub repository stilero/claude-plugins (2 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 111 tokens to every session and 2,738 once invoked, about $0.0006 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
