media3-smoothstreaming-playback

media3-smoothstreaming-playback is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from sunnat629/android-media-pack. It costs 30 tokens per session (561 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Android playback support for SmoothStreaming, an adaptive video format that delivers media in pieces based on connection speed. It covers stream manifests, fallback choices, and limits of this older streaming format.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when an Android app must play SmoothStreaming manifests with Media3 ExoPlayer, including live or on-demand video, subtitles, and DRM-protected streams.
Why use it?
It helps avoid incorrect stream-type detection and confusing playback failures. It also separates manifest, network, digital-rights, codec, and rendering problems during troubleshooting.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00030 $0.00561
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.00280
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00112
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

media3-smoothstreaming-playback scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Trigger

Use when an app must play SmoothStreaming manifests or add media3-exoplayer-smoothstreaming.

Rules

  • Start with streaming-media-architecture for ownership, KMP split, preload, and telemetry.
  • Pin Media3 to 1.10.1 through the version catalog.
  • Keep SmoothStreaming code in Android source sets.
  • Use this only when the stream source is SmoothStreaming; prefer HLS/DASH skills for modern adaptive delivery.
  • Validate manifest URI, DRM needs, subtitles, and live/VOD behavior before changing UI.
  • Track manifest parse errors separately from HTTP, DRM, codec, and renderer failures.
  • Reuse shared ABR, load-control, and network policy from existing playback infrastructure.
  • MUST set MimeTypes.APPLICATION_SS on the MediaItem when the URI does not end in .ism/Manifest; otherwise Media3 cannot infer the stream type.

Example

media3-exoplayer = { module = "androidx.media3:media3-exoplayer", version.ref = "media3" }
media3-exoplayer-smoothstreaming = { module = "androidx.media3:media3-exoplayer-smoothstreaming", version.ref = "media3" }
// URI ends in .ism/Manifest: type is inferred.
player.setMediaItem(MediaItem.fromUri(smoothStreamingManifestUri))
player.prepare()

// URI does not end in .ism/Manifest: set the MIME type explicitly.
player.setMediaItem(
    MediaItem.Builder()
        .setUri(opaqueManifestUri)
        .setMimeType(MimeTypes.APPLICATION_SS)
        .build()
)
player.prepare()

Do Not

  • Do not convert HLS/DASH tasks into SmoothStreaming work.
  • Do not hide manifest failures behind a generic "video failed" message.
  • Do not duplicate ABR policy already covered by media3-bandwidth-abr.
  • media3-hls-dash-adaptive-streaming
  • media3-bandwidth-abr
  • media3-drm-widevine-setup
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
