media3-video-playback

media3-video-playback is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from sunnat629/android-media-pack. It costs 37 tokens per session (414 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for building Android video playback with Media3, a library for playing media, including video surfaces, aspect ratio, first-frame display, HDR, picture-in-picture, and fullscreen.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when fixing video rendering, first-frame handoff, HDR, picture-in-picture, fullscreen, or scrolling-feed playback.
Why use it?
It helps prevent visual glitches such as flicker, incorrect cropping, and placeholders disappearing at the wrong time. It also sets rules for choosing display surfaces and sharing playback state safely between Android and shared code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00037 $0.00414
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.00207
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00041

Security

Grade A, and why

media3-video-playback scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Trigger

Use for video rendering bugs, blink/flicker, wrong crop, first-frame handoff, PiP, HDR, or fullscreen behavior.

Rules

  • Start with streaming-media-architecture for ownership, KMP split, preload window, and telemetry.
  • Pin Media3 to 1.10.1 through the version catalog.
  • Keep Media3 APIs in Android source sets; expose KMP-safe state/events upward.
  • Use onRenderedFirstFrame plus media identity to remove placeholders.
  • Do not change surface type while the player is attached.
  • SurfaceView is PREFERRED everywhere, including inline scrollers. Fall back to TextureView only when SurfaceView cannot satisfy the requirement, for example smooth scroll or transition animation on pre-API 24 devices. TextureView costs more power, has weaker frame timing, and cannot show HDR or secure (DRM) output.
  • Aspect comes from onVideoSizeChanged, not thumbnail size.

Example

val readyForVideo = state.mediaUri == uri && state.renderedMediaUri == uri
// thumbnail visible while !readyForVideo
  • media3-compose-ui-material3
  • media3-analytics-telemetry
  • streaming-media-architecture
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
