counter-position

counter-position is a skill for Claude Code from supportersimulator/3-surgeons. It costs 23 tokens per session (1,190 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A review process that requires an argument and its strongest opposing case to be examined before deciding. It is designed to expose unsupported assumptions and confirmation bias, where people favor evidence that agrees with them.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps challenge architecture choices, high-confidence claims with little evidence, dominant group opinions, high-risk changes, and reasoning that relies on words such as “obvious” or “clear.”
Why use it?
It reduces the risk of approving architectural or other high-risk decisions without seriously considering alternatives and objections.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.01190
Opus 5 $0.00012 $0.00595
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00238
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00119

Security

Grade A, and why

counter-position scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Counter-Position Protocol

Philosophy

An opinion is NOT valid until you can effectively argue BOTH sides.

This is not debate for debate's sake. It is the core epistemological discipline: if you cannot steelman the opposition, you have not understood the problem deeply enough to decide. Confirmation bias is the failure mode this protocol exists to prevent.

Auto-Invocation Triggers

Signal Why
Any architectural decision Architectural choices are expensive to reverse
High confidence + low evidence Confidence without evidence = confabulation
Single surgeon dominates consensus Groupthink risk — the dissenting view needs construction
Sentinel risk >= high High-risk changes deserve adversarial scrutiny
"Obviously" or "clearly" in reasoning These words often mask unexamined assumptions

The 4-Step Protocol

You MUST create a TodoWrite task for each step:

Step 1: State the Claim

What is being asserted? Write it as a clear, falsifiable statement.

Good: "We should use Redis sorted sets for the priority queue because they provide O(log N) insertion with built-in ordering."

Bad: "Redis is the right choice." (Too vague to counter — what aspect? Compared to what?)

Step 2: Steelman the Opposition

Construct the strongest possible argument AGAINST the claim. This is not a strawman — it is the best case the other side could make.

Rules:

  • Argue as if you genuinely believe the opposition
  • Use the strongest evidence available, not the weakest
  • Address the claim's actual strengths, not irrelevant weaknesses
  • If you cannot construct a strong counter-argument, that IS evidence the claim is strong

Step 3: Test the Opposition

Check the counter-argument against actual code, evidence, and data. This is where theory meets reality.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

counter-position is a skill published in the GitHub repository supportersimulator/3-surgeons (2 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 1,190 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
