whats-next

whats-next is a skill for Claude Code from swt-labs/vibe-better-with-claude-code-vbw. It costs 48 tokens per session (415 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A recommendation workflow for choosing the next VBW project task. It reviews open requirements, backlog items, available effort, and earlier decisions, then stores a top choice and alternatives.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after shipping work or when you ask what to do next, provided no other VBW run is already open.
Why use it?
It turns an open-ended question about what to do next into a ranked set of tasks with estimated size.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00048 $0.00415
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00166
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00042

Measured today against content hash 81dbdac6876b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

whats-next scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

What's next

"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/vbw" triage --json 2>&1 || true
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/vbw" config models 2>&1 || true
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/vbw" config effort 2>&1 || true
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/vbw" suggest list 2>&1 || true
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/bin/vbw" interview 2>&1 || true

Above: the open requirements and backlog (summary), the models, the effort table, the declined suggestions and the user's answers. Write to the user's level, explanation depth and involvement ("-": plain words).

Steps

  1. The summary shows a run is open (run is not null): say so in one line and do not start. Stop here.
  2. Otherwise run Workflow vbw:recommending with args {"summary": <the triage JSON>, "declined": <declined suggestion texts>, "models": ..., "effort": ..., "profile": <the interview answers>}. It starts no run.
  3. Pipe its recommendation (JSON) to vbw recommend.
  4. Show the what's-next part of vbw status.

When it does not work

The workflow returns an error, or vbw recommend refuses: say so in one line, with the reason. The earlier recommendation stays. A ship that came first stays shipped (never undone). Do not retry and do not ask the user.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
