add-mcp-tool

add-mcp-tool is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from tacticlaunch/mcp-linear. It costs 36 tokens per session (303 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for adding or updating an MCP tool in mcp-linear, from inspecting existing code through implementation, documentation, tests, and build checks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add a new Linear tool or expose an existing service method, including SDK inspection, service changes, definitions, handlers, guards, registrations, TOOLS.md, focused tests, and verification.
Why use it?
It provides the complete set of steps needed to expose a Linear capability reliably, while preserving exact input and output contracts.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00036 $0.00303
Opus 5 $0.00018 $0.00151
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00061
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00030

Security

Grade A, and why

add-mcp-tool scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Use this workflow when adding a tool to mcp-linear.

Goal

Implement a Linear capability end-to-end so the MCP surface, runtime behavior, and docs stay aligned.

Workflow

  1. Inspect the existing domain files under src/tools/definitions, src/tools/handlers, and src/services/linear-service.ts to find the closest pattern.
  2. Check whether the capability already exists in LinearService.
  3. Inspect @linear/sdk before writing new GraphQL.
  4. Implement or update the service method so it returns normalized plain objects.
  5. Add or update the tool definition with explicit required fields, enums, nullability, and numeric constraints.
  6. Add or update the handler so it validates, delegates, and logs failures.
  7. Add or update the type guard in src/tools/type-guards.ts.
  8. Register the tool in both index files.
  9. Update TOOLS.md.
  10. Add focused tests in src/__tests__.
  11. Run npm test and npm run build.

Project-specific reminders

  • Prefer SDK methods first.
  • If you use direct GraphQL because the SDK is stale or missing support, document why.
  • Keep handlers thin.
  • Be exact about nullable update semantics and output schema fidelity.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
