kmp-build-setup

kmp-build-setup is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from TalissonVitorino/kmp-ios-skills. It costs 166 tokens per session (1,000 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to configuring the Gradle build for Kotlin Multiplatform projects. It explains targets, shared and platform-specific source sets, the automatic source-set hierarchy, and dependencies for platforms such as Android, iOS, JVM, JavaScript, and WebAssembly.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when creating or repairing a multiplatform Gradle build, adding a platform target, configuring Android, or placing dependencies in common or platform-specific code.
Why use it?
It helps resolve build errors caused by missing targets, incorrectly wired dependencies, or unavailable source sets. It also provides a consistent place to define which platforms the shared module supports.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00166 $0.01000
Opus 5 $0.00083 $0.00500
Sonnet 5 $0.00033 $0.00200
Haiku 4.5 $0.00017 $0.00100

Security

Grade A, and why

kmp-build-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

KMP Build Setup (Gradle)

Overview

The Kotlin Multiplatform Gradle plugin's kotlin {} block declares targets; from the declared targets it generates a source-set hierarchy (commonMain → intermediate iosMain → leaf iosArm64Main) via the default hierarchy template. Shared code lives in commonMain, platform code in the platform source sets. Requires Kotlin 1.9.20+ (hierarchy template); current line is Kotlin 2.1.x.

When to use

  • New or broken shared/build.gradle.kts
  • Adding a target (iosArm64, jvm, js, wasmJs) or a source set
  • "source set not found" or dependency-wiring issues across commonMain/iosMain
  • Configuring the android {} block for androidTarget

Plugins + targets

plugins {
    kotlin("multiplatform") version "2.1.x"
    id("com.android.library") version "8.x"
}

kotlin {
    androidTarget()          // Android target
    iosArm64()               // real devices
    iosSimulatorArm64()      // Apple-silicon simulator
    iosX64()                 // Intel simulator (optional)

    // The default hierarchy template runs automatically.
    // Call explicitly only when you customize the hierarchy:
    // applyDefaultHierarchyTemplate()

    sourceSets {
        commonMain.dependencies {
            implementation("org.jetbrains.kotlinx:kotlinx-coroutines-core:<v>")
        }
        androidMain.dependencies { /* OkHttp, Android-only libs */ }
        iosMain.dependencies     { /* Darwin engine, Apple-only libs */ }
        commonTest.dependencies  { implementation(kotlin("test")) }
    }
}

android {
    namespace = "com.example.shared"
    compileSdk = 35
    defaultConfig { minSdk = 24 }
}

Source-set hierarchy (auto-generated)

commonMain ─┬─ androidMain
            └─ iosMain ─┬─ iosArm64Main
                        ├─ iosSimulatorArm64Main
                        └─ iosX64Main

Declaring iosArm64() + iosSimulatorArm64() makes the plugin create the shared iosMain intermediate set automatically — put shared iOS actual code there, not in a single leaf set.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
