trace-fix

trace-fix is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from The-Artificer-of-Ciphers-LLC/skills-from-the-artificer. It costs 137 tokens per session (3,290 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A step-by-step debugging method for Swift and Apple-platform apps that traces what the program actually does before changing code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for crashes, freezes, hangs, missing or incorrect data, silent failures, and intermittent bugs.
Why use it?
It reduces guesswork and prevents fixes that only appear to work because of timing or a single manual test.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00137 $0.03290
Opus 5.5 $0.00055 $0.01316
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00027 $0.00658
Haiku 4.5 $0.00014 $0.00329

Measured 7d ago against content hash e95346d1991f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

trace-fix scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

/trace-fix: Trace Before You Fix

Why this protocol exists

Guess-and-ship debugging is expensive: every wrong fix costs a build, a test pass, and often a release. Worse, a wrong fix can look right (timing shifts, one manual test passes) and ship with false confidence. Investigations that follow a structured trace tend to find the cause in minutes; investigations that skip it tend to take many cycles.

Do not write fix code until you have passed Gate 3.

The pattern that wastes cycles

Illustrative example (invented):

Attempt 1: "It hangs. I bet it's parsing." -> Fix parsing -> Ship
Attempt 2: "Still hangs sometimes. Maybe main-thread work?" -> Wrap in Task -> Ship
Attempt 3: "Worked in one manual test" -> Ship with false confidence
Attempt 4: "It's back." -> ...

In this kind of story the actual cause is usually something nobody measured: for example, a loop of a few hundred iterations each doing a small synchronous call on the main actor, which starves the run loop. Parsing was never the bottleneck, and Task { @MainActor in } does not yield to the UI by itself. Nobody checked either assumption.

The Gates

GATE 1: TRACE the execution path

Answer these with evidence (file:line references), not guesses:

  1. What user action triggers the bug?
  2. What is the FULL execution path from that action to where things go wrong?
  3. At which specific point does behavior diverge from expected?

How to trace:

  • Start at the user action (button tap, view appear, notification, timer).
  • Follow every call. For each function: what does it do, what does it call next, what does it return?
  • Write the chain: UserTaps -> ViewAction -> ViewModel.method -> Service.method -> ...
  • For crashes: find the first frame in your own code and trace backwards to the triggering action.

CHECKPOINT: a written trace with file:line for each step. If you cannot trace the full path, investigate that gap rather than guessing.

Anti-pattern: "I added logs to see what's happening." You must READ the output and state what it told you. If the logs show nothing, that is information: the path is not being hit, which changes your hypothesis.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

trace-fix is a skill published in the GitHub repository The-Artificer-of-Ciphers-LLC/skills-from-the-artificer (6 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 137 tokens to every session and 3,290 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-15.
