VSA

VSA is a skill for Claude Code from the-metafactory/soma. It costs 65 tokens per session (929 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A VSA guide for defining the intended finished state of a project or change, including its success criteria, decisions, plan, and verification record.

In plain words
What is it for?
For writing project specifications, deriving criteria, planning features, recording decisions, checking completeness, and reconciling work back to the main specification.
Why use it?
It gives a shared definition of done and a place to check whether the work is complete and properly verified.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00065 $0.00929
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00464
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00186
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00093

Security

Grade A, and why

VSA scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 93 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

VSA

The VSA is the document that articulates "done" for work whose ideal state is being pursued: a project, feature, library, infrastructure change, work session, art piece, or strategic decision. It acts as ideal-state articulation, test harness, done condition, verification record, and system of record.

Fast Path

  1. Identify the requested VSA workflow from the routing table below.
  2. Load only that workflow file from Workflows/.
  3. Load references/format.md only when the task needs section, tier, ISC, or reconciliation rules.
  4. Load references/examples.md only when scaffolding or comparing against an exemplar.
  5. Load references/gotchas.md before reconcile, tier checks, or any edit that might renumber criteria.

Do not load the full examples directory by default. Pick the smallest example that matches the task tier and domain.

When To Use

Use when the prompt mentions ideal state, VSA, ISC, ideal state criteria, project specification, articulating done, scaffolding an VSA, interviewing for an VSA, checking completeness, reconciling an ephemeral feature file back to a master VSA, or seeding an VSA from an existing project.

Do not use for creating new skills, running the Algorithm itself, generating non-VSA artifacts, postmortems, decision logs, or engineering journals. Those are retrospective; the VSA is a commitment-time scaffold.

Workflow Routing

When ambiguous, default to Scaffold for new VSAs and CheckCompleteness for audits.

Intent Workflow Load
scaffold, create, generate, new VSA, extract feature as ephemeral Scaffold Workflows/Scaffold.md
interview me, fill in, deepen, ask questions Interview Workflows/Interview.md
check, audit, score, is this complete CheckCompleteness Workflows/CheckCompleteness.md
reconcile, merge feature file back, ephemeral to master Reconcile Workflows/Reconcile.md
seed, bootstrap from repo, draft from existing code Seed Workflows/Seed.md
append decision, append changelog, append verification, record C/R/L Append Workflows/Append.md

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

VSA is a skill published in the GitHub repository the-metafactory/soma (8 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 65 tokens to every session and 929 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
