Gitleaks Secret Detector

Gitleaks Secret Detector is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from theshubh007/agent-skill-finder. It costs 73 tokens per session (607 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository scanner that uses Gitleaks to find hardcoded passwords, API keys, tokens, and other credentials in source files or Git history. It reports the file, line, credential type, and a redacted preview.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to scan a repository, file path, branch, or commit for exposed credentials and check whether the scan is clean.
Why use it?
It helps detect secrets that may have been accidentally committed while avoiding exposure of the complete secret value in the results.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00073 $0.00607
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.00303
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00121
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00061

Security

Grade A, and why

Gitleaks Secret Detector scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

What this skill does

Runs gitleaks detect against a local git repository and parses the JSON output into structured findings. Each finding reports the rule ID, the type of credential detected, the file and line number, and a redacted match preview. Never returns the full unredacted secret value.

Inputs

  • repo_path — absolute or relative path to the git repository root
  • config_path — optional path to a custom .gitleaks.toml allowlist config
  • branch — optional branch name or commit SHA to scan (default: current HEAD)

Outputs

  • findings — list of {rule_id, file, line_number, secret_type, redacted_match, commit} objects
  • total_count — total number of secrets detected
  • cleantrue when total_count == 0

Example

gitleaks detect --source . --report-format json --report-path findings.json
{
  "findings": [
    {
      "rule_id": "aws-access-token",
      "file": "scripts/deploy.sh",
      "line_number": 14,
      "secret_type": "AWS Access Key ID",
      "redacted_match": "AKIA***XYZ",
      "commit": "a3f2c1d"
    }
  ],
  "total_count": 1,
  "clean": false
}

Notes

  • Requires gitleaks binary on PATH (brew install gitleaks or download from GitHub releases)
  • Use config_path to add allowlist entries for test fixtures or known false positives
  • Output never includes the full unredacted secret — only the redacted preview
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
