machineconfig: Skill for Claude Code

.github/skills/make-github-installer-config/SKILL.md

make-github-installer-config is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from thisismygitrepo/machineconfig. It costs 37 tokens per session (1,128 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A skill for creating an installer configuration entry from a software project's GitHub releases page. It scans released files, determines licensing information, builds the entry, and adds it to the installer's configuration.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding a new GitHub-hosted application to the machineconfig installer list.
Why use it?
Adding a binary installer entry requires checking release files and keeping the configuration format correct. This process provides those checks and requires helper scripts to run through uv.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

This is thisismygitrepo/machineconfig's own configuration. It tells Claude Code and Codex how to work on machineconfig itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything machineconfig configures →

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is --output ./.ai/tmp_scripts/make-github-installer-config/scan.json.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00037 $0.01128
Opus 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00451
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00226
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00113

Security

Grade A, and why

make-github-installer-config scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 4 executable files (scripts/build_installer_config.py, scripts/scan_github_releases.py, scripts/skill_lib.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 132 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Goal: produce one JSON object compatible with the live InstallerData shape used by src/machineconfig/jobs/installer/installer_data.json and safely upsert it into the installers array.

Mandatory execution rule:

  • Run all helper scripts with uv run ....
  • Never run these helpers with plain python.

When invoked, follow this process:

  1. Read target repoURL, appName, and doc from the user request.
  2. Resolve license:
  • If the user explicitly supplied a license string, pass it to the builder with --license.
  • Otherwise let the builder infer the license from GitHub repository metadata, then verify that inferred value before writing.
  1. Scan releases and classify candidate binaries:
uv run .github/skills/make-github-installer-config/scripts/scan_github_releases.py \
  --repo-url "https://github.com/OWNER/REPO" \
  --limit 8 \
  --output ./.ai/tmp_scripts/make-github-installer-config/scan.json
  1. Build inferred config and run latest-release presence checks:
uv run .github/skills/make-github-installer-config/scripts/build_installer_config.py \
  --repo-url "https://github.com/OWNER/REPO" \
  --app-name "appname" \
  --doc "short description" \
  --limit 8 \
  --output ./.ai/tmp_scripts/make-github-installer-config/entry.json

Optional license override:

uv run .github/skills/make-github-installer-config/scripts/build_installer_config.py \
  --repo-url "https://github.com/OWNER/REPO" \
  --app-name "appname" \
  --doc "short description" \
  --license "MIT License" \
  --limit 8 \
  --output ./.ai/tmp_scripts/make-github-installer-config/entry.json
  1. Verify checks from entry.json before writing:
  • If checks.latestPatternChecks is non-empty, treat as warning and explain why.
  • If checks.licenseWarning is non-null, treat as warning and explain why.
  • Do not silently ignore failed checks.
  1. Perform a dry-run upsert first:
uv run .github/skills/make-github-installer-config/scripts/upsert_installer_data.py \
  --installer-data src/machineconfig/jobs/installer/installer_data.json \
  --entry-json ./.ai/tmp_scripts/make-github-installer-config/entry.json \
  --dry-run
  1. If dry-run output is correct, run actual upsert:
uv run .github/skills/make-github-installer-config/scripts/upsert_installer_data.py \
  --installer-data src/machineconfig/jobs/installer/installer_data.json \
  --entry-json ./.ai/tmp_scripts/make-github-installer-config/entry.json
  1. Validate resulting JSON file:
jq empty src/machineconfig/jobs/installer/installer_data.json

Output JSON entry must use this exact shape:

{
  "appName": "...",
  "license": "...",
  "repoURL": "https://github.com/OWNER/REPO",
  "doc": "...",
  "fileNamePattern": {
    "amd64": {
      "linux": "... or null",
      "darwin": "... or null",
      "windows": "... or null"
    },
    "arm64": {
      "linux": "... or null",
      "darwin": "... or null",
      "windows": "... or null"
    }
  }
}

Requirements:

  • license is required. Prefer the GitHub repo license metadata unless the user explicitly overrides it.
  • If GitHub does not declare a license, use "No license asserted" and call that out explicitly.
  • If binaries are unavailable for a platform/architecture, set that value to null.
  • Prefer Linux musl artifacts over gnu when both are available.
  • Use stable, recurring filename patterns from recent releases.
  • Keep appName lowercase and concise.
  • Keep doc short and descriptive.
  • Keep license short and literal; do not invent SPDX identifiers that upstream does not declare.
  • Ensure selected non-null patterns match at least one asset in the latest inspected release.
  • Return valid JSON only for the object itself (no surrounding prose) unless the user asks for explanation.

Safety and idempotency rules:

  • Always check whether an entry with the same appName or repoURL already exists.
  • If present, update in place instead of duplicating.
  • If duplicate entries already exist, keep one and remove extras.
  • Always perform dry-run before writing.
  • Keep a backup when writing.
  • Never mutate unrelated installer entries.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
