cadence: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/systematic-debugging/SKILL.md

systematic-debugging is a skill for Claude Code from thomas-powers-jr/cadence. It costs 103 tokens per session (1,646 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A debugging method that records every possible cause of a failure in a persistent list and requires each one to be tested, confirmed, or rejected before naming a root cause. A root cause is the underlying reason a failure occurs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for failed tests, red CI builds, unexpected behavior, reported bugs, or fixes that did not work, especially when the failure can be reproduced.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk of stopping at the first explanation that happens to fit the evidence and leaves a reviewable record for the next person.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00103 $0.01646
Opus 5.5 $0.00041 $0.00658
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00329
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00165

Measured 1mo ago against content hash 5aeb25420afb, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

systematic-debugging scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 154 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Systematic debugging (ledger-backed)

Debugging fails in a predictable way: you form one hypothesis, find something consistent with it, and stop. The trail lives in a transcript nobody rereads, so the next person — often you — starts over.

This skill fixes the second problem structurally and the first by discipline. Every hypothesis becomes a row in CADENCE's assumption ledger, tied to one anchor recommendation, and it must be closed validated or rejected before you may name a root cause.

What is and is not enforced. The ledger is real: cadence assumption rows persist, and the conclusion query below is deterministic. But CADENCE does not refuse a conclusion the way settle refuses a phase — no gate fires, nothing exits non-zero if you conclude with hypotheses open. This is a gate you honor, not one the engine enforces. Its value is that afterwards anyone can run one command and see whether you honored it. Do not describe this skill, in a SUMMARY or anywhere else, as CADENCE enforcing debugging discipline.

Preconditions

  • A symptom you can reproduce. If you cannot reproduce it, that is the finding — report it and gather data. It is not a licence to start hypothesizing; an unreproducible symptom cannot falsify anything, so every hypothesis you form is unfalsifiable by construction.
  • Read the error first, completely. Stack trace, line numbers, exit code. A surprising number of bugs are already named in the text you skipped.
  • .cadence/ is initialized. The ledger commands write there. In a fresh worktree run cadence onboard first.
  • You have not already applied a fix. If you have, say so — you are now debugging two things, and the fix may be masking the symptom.

Pipeline

1. File the anchor

Every assumption must belong to a recommendation — assumption add requires --rec. File one for the bug before forming any hypothesis:

cadence recommendation add \
  --title "bug: <symptom in one line>" \
--summary "<what you observe, and the exact reproduction>" \
  --priority medium --readiness needs-evidence \
  --area <area> --file <path/to/suspect.ts>

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

systematic-debugging is a skill published in the GitHub repository thomas-powers-jr/cadence (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 103 tokens to every session and 1,646 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-24.
