knowledge-search

knowledge-search is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Threat-Vector-Security/guardian-agent. It costs 0 tokens per session (320 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A search workflow for finding answers in local documents, notes, wikis, or repository files that have already been added to an index.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to discover information across indexed content, read the relevant files afterward, check indexing status, and refresh the index when needed.
Why use it?
It avoids manually opening many files and helps narrow broad searches to the passages that matter.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00320
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00160
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00064
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00032

Measured 5d ago against content hash d1b9b998ee36, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

knowledge-search scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Use indexed search when the user wants answers from local docs, notes, wikis, or repository content that has already been ingested into the search service.

Workflow

  1. Use doc_search for discovery across indexed collections.
  2. Read only the specific files or passages you need after the search narrows the scope.
    • Use fs_read for exact follow-up reads, including direct text extraction from a known local PDF path.
  3. Use doc_search_status when the user asks about indexing health or when search results look unexpectedly empty.
  4. Use doc_search_reindex only when stale or missing search state is actually blocking the task.
  5. When the user wants a summary of local docs or indexed material, summarize from the retrieved passages directly instead of depending on an external summary CLI unless that reviewed third-party skill has been explicitly approved and enabled.

Practical Rules

  • Prefer indexed search for broad discovery.
  • Prefer fs_read or fs_search only after you know the file or exact target.
  • For one specific local PDF file, prefer fs_read; for many PDFs or broad discovery, index them and use doc_search.
  • Tell the user when the answer is coming from indexed content versus a direct file read.

Gotchas

  • Do not reindex first; confirm that stale or missing index state is actually the blocker.
  • Do not present indexed-search results as if they cover files that were never ingested.
  • Do not read large numbers of files after search if a few targeted passages answer the question.
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

knowledge-search is a skill published in the GitHub repository Threat-Vector-Security/guardian-agent (11 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 320 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
