start-month is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from tomzx/agents. It costs 45 tokens per session (690 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A monthly planning helper that reviews prior goals and work, then sets a theme and outcomes for the new calendar month.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose monthly priorities, review carryover items, connect work to larger goals, and decide what to protect or stop doing.
Why use it?
It makes monthly planning continuous by carrying forward useful work and lessons from the previous month.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00045 $0.00690
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.00345
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00138
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00069

Security

Grade A, and why

start-month scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Start Month

Sets intent for the calendar month: theme, a small set of outcomes, carryover from last month’s review, and what to protect or drop.

Prerequisites

  • NOTES_DIR set (via ~/.agents/scripts/get-env NOTES_DIR)
  • Optional: {BASE_DIR}/goals.md, {BASE_DIR}/team-goals.md
  • Optional: {BASE_DIR}/{PREV_YEAR}/{PREV_MONTH}/month-review.md (from end-of-month-review)
  • Optional: latest weekly plan.md or review.md under {BASE_DIR}/{YEAR}/weekly/ for continuity

Steps

1. Resolve month context

Use calendar month {MONTH} and {YEAR}. For “last month,” use {PREV_YEAR} and {PREV_MONTH} (handles January rolling to December of the prior year when using the same date patterns as end-of-month-review).

2. Gather context

Read if they exist:

  • {BASE_DIR}/{PREV_YEAR}/{PREV_MONTH}/month-review.md (especially the Next Month section)
  • {BASE_DIR}/goals.md and {BASE_DIR}/team-goals.md
  • This month’s {BASE_DIR}/{YEAR}/{MONTH}/month-plan.md if you already started the month

3. Synthesize (in chat unless the user asks for a file)

Deliver:

  • Theme (one line for the month)
  • Top 3 to 5 outcomes (measurable or clearly done or not done)
  • Carryover from last month’s review (scheduled, delegated, or explicitly dropped)
  • Strategic focus (single most important thread, aligned with goals or OKRs)
  • Risks (capacity, dependencies, recurring commitments to trim)

If last month’s month-review.md is missing, note the gap and plan from goals plus what the user states.

4. Optional file output

If the user wants it persisted, write {BASE_DIR}/{YEAR}/{MONTH}/month-plan.md:

---
month: {MONTH_NAME} {YEAR}
date: {TODAY}
---

# Month plan

## Theme
## Top outcomes (3 to 5)
## Carryover from last month
## Strategic focus
## Risks and constraints

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

start-month is a skill published in the GitHub repository tomzx/agents (6 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 45 tokens to every session and 690 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
