yt-dlp

yt-dlp is a skill for Claude Code from trtmn/agent-plugins. It costs 109 tokens per session (1,586 once invoked), scanned A, original, Unlicense.

A workflow for downloading YouTube videos, thumbnails, and subtitles with yt-dlp. It can convert videos to HEVC/AAC MP4 for Apple TV compatibility and optionally copy them to a remote media server and refresh Jellyfin.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for saving YouTube media locally, converting files for Apple TV, syncing them over SSH or rsync, and updating a Jellyfin library when configured.
Why use it?
It avoids manually handling downloads, incompatible video formats, remote copying, and media-library updates.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: allowed-tools in frontmatter. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions subagents; names the AskUserQuestion tool.

Runs only inside its plugin — its command needs a path that Claude Code sets for a plugin’s own hooks and for nothing else. Install the plugin, not this.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00109 $0.01586
Opus 5.5 $0.00044 $0.00634
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00022 $0.00317
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00159

Security

Grade A, and why

yt-dlp scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 25d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/ytdlp.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

yt-dlp

Download YouTube videos/thumbnails/subtitles, fix up anything Apple TV can't play natively, and (optionally) ship the result to a media server.

First-time setup

The script needs a stable working directory outside the plugin cache — downloads/, an optional cookies.txt, and an optional .env all live there and must survive plugin updates. Create one once:

mkdir -p ~/.claude/yt-dlp

If remote sync or Jellyfin integration is wanted, create ~/.claude/yt-dlp/.env with any of these (all optional — omit a var entirely to disable that feature, there is no working default to fall back to):

# Remote media server to sync downloads to over rsync/SSH.
# Leave both unset to keep downloads local only.
[email protected]
YTDLP_REMOTE_PATH=/path/on/remote/YouTube/

# Jellyfin library refresh, triggered after a successful sync.
JELLYFIN_URL=https://your-jellyfin-server
JELLYFIN_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
JELLYFIN_LIBRARY_ID=<optional-specific-library-id>

If this machine is the remote media server itself (its hostname matches the host portion of YTDLP_REMOTE_HOST), the script copies files locally instead of round-tripping over SSH.

Requirements

  • uv — runs the script with its dependencies fetched on the fly (yt-dlp, click, requests, python-dotenv); no project install step needed.
  • deno — enables YouTube's JS challenge solver. Without it you'll see warnings and fewer available formats. brew install deno (macOS) or see https://deno.land.
  • ffmpeg / ffprobe — required for the Apple TV compatibility conversion step. If absent, conversion is skipped with a warning (files still download and sync, just not re-encoded). brew install ffmpeg.
  • rsync + SSH key access to the remote host — only needed if YTDLP_REMOTE_HOST is set.
  • cookies.txt in ~/.claude/yt-dlp/ — optional, helps with age-restricted or private videos.

Usage

/ytdlp <youtube-url>
/ytdlp --thumbnails-only <youtube-url>
/ytdlp --skip-sync <youtube-url>
/ytdlp --skip-convert <youtube-url>          # skip the Apple TV compatibility re-encode
/ytdlp --sw-encode <youtube-url>             # force CPU (libx265) encode instead of GPU
/ytdlp --thumbnails-only --skip-sync <youtube-url>

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
