quota-saving-mode

quota-saving-mode is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from uchicago-dsi/ai-sci-skills. It costs 46 tokens per session (2,359 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A working mode for reducing unnecessary model usage during repeated supervision, polling, context loading, and status updates. It keeps the requested quality and does not secretly change the model or task scope.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when a long-running task needs fewer repetitive updates while preserving important decisions, scientific review, and safety checks.
Why use it?
It helps avoid spending model quota on repeated checks that reveal no new information. The mode still requires needed monitoring and verification.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.02359
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00944
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00472
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00236

Security

Grade A, and why

quota-saving-mode scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Quota-Saving Mode

Spend reasoning on decisions, implementation and verification—not repeatedly rediscovering unchanged state. This is an operating preference, not a runtime setting or a guarantee about billed usage. Follow required progress reporting, tool wait limits, safety rules and the user's model choices.

Default operating loop

  • Choose a meaningful next decision boundary and the evidence that would change the action. Work through a coherent block instead of ending a turn after each healthy poll; an automatically resumed goal can otherwise become a costly status loop. Do not pause an authorized goal merely to save quota.
  • Separate mechanical health checks from scientific review. Check startup and unfamiliar failure modes promptly. Once healthy, use the existing expected cadence: ordinarily minutes for cheap process/error checks, a checkpoint or roughly 15–30 minutes for substantive interpretation. Shorten this when delayed action would lose evidence, leave resources idle or miss a deadline. These are defaults, not permission to weaken a required monitor.
  • Prefer existing completion signals or native interruptible waits. Where tools support it, keep repeated short waits and cheap status checks inside one composed tool execution; return to model reasoning for a result, error, deadline, user steering or decision-changing evidence. Obey per-call wait limits rather than issuing an uninterruptible long sleep. Never infer terminal failure from a timeout or stale log alone; verify the same live handle. The concrete form of this is the next section, and it is not optional: a wait loop is the single largest avoidable cost this skill exists to prevent.
  • Give substantive user updates at milestones, failures, decisions or requests, not after every poll. Use the smallest permitted heartbeat when higher-priority instructions require more frequent progress reports. Do not promise to remove runtime-mandated updates or control CLI wakeups that tools do not expose.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

quota-saving-mode is a skill published in the GitHub repository uchicago-dsi/ai-sci-skills (20 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 46 tokens to every session and 2,359 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-23.
