worker-classification

worker-classification is a skill for Claude Code from uk-agents/uk-legal-plugins. It costs 102 tokens per session (4,717 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for deciding whether a proposed UK engagement is an employee, a worker, or a self-employed contractor. It also covers IR35, the UK rules for off-payroll work through a personal service company.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to assess proposed contractor, employee, worker, and personal-service-company arrangements and identify facts that need legal review.
Why use it?
It highlights gaps between the label used in a contract and what the working arrangement actually supports. The assessment is for future engagements, not existing relationships.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00102 $0.04717
Opus 5 $0.00051 $0.02358
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00943
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00472

Security

Grade A, and why

worker-classification scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 346 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

/worker-classification

Runs the applicable UK classification tests for the proposed arrangement and flags where the facts don't match the intended structure. Prospective only — for existing relationships, consult a solicitor.

Instructions

  1. Load ~/.claude/plugins/config/uk-legal-plugins/employment-legal-uk/CLAUDE.md → jurisdictional footprint, escalation table.
  2. Run the full workflow below.
  3. If the user provides details upfront, extract what's available and ask only about the gaps.

Examples

/employment-legal-uk:worker-classification
We want to bring on a data engineer for 6 months, working out of our
London office, using our tools, embedded in our analytics team.
/employment-legal-uk:worker-classification
Is our recruiter contractor arrangement okay? She works exclusively for
us, sets her own hours, uses her own laptop, fee per placement.
/employment-legal-uk:worker-classification
(skill will ask for details)

Matter context

Matter context. Check ## Matter workspaces in the practice-level CLAUDE.md. If Enabled is (the default for in-house users), skip the rest of this paragraph. If enabled and there is no active matter, ask: "Which matter is this for? Run /employment-legal-uk:matter-workspace switch <slug> or say practice-level." Load the active matter's matter.md for matter-specific context and overrides. Write outputs to the matter folder at ~/.claude/plugins/config/uk-legal-plugins/employment-legal-uk/matters/<matter-slug>/. Never read another matter's files unless Cross-matter context is on.

Purpose

The most expensive classification decision is the one nobody made consciously. Someone describes what they want ("a contractor"), the engagement starts, and two years later the facts look like employment or deemed employment for tax. This skill walks the applicable UK tests on the proposed arrangement before it starts — and tells you when what you're describing doesn't match the structure you're trying to use.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

worker-classification is a skill published in the GitHub repository uk-agents/uk-legal-plugins (9 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 102 tokens to every session and 4,717 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
