myanimelist-mcp: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/verify-mal-api-fact/SKILL.md

verify-mal-api-fact is a skill for Claude Code from UmutKDev/myanimelist-mcp. It costs 43 tokens per session (437 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A procedure for checking uncertain MyAnimeList API behavior against the live service before coding against it. MyAnimeList is a website for tracking anime and manga.

In plain words
What is it for?
Confirming request fields, response shapes, rate limits, authentication behavior, and other API details before implementing features.
Why use it?
The service documentation may be inaccurate, and guessing its responses or error codes can cause integration bugs. Verified observations are recorded for later use.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00043 $0.00437
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00218
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00087
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00044

Security

Grade A, and why

verify-mal-api-fact scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Verify a MAL API fact

This repo has a strong culture of recording live-verified MAL API / FastMCP behavior in NOTES.md before coding against it. Don't guess at API shape — verify, then write it down.

Steps

  1. Check NOTES.md first — it is the verified-facts log. If the behavior is already recorded, use it.
  2. If unknown/uncertain, verify against the live API — a curl with a valid token, or a throwaway async script using MALClient. Observe the actual response shape/status, not the docs (MAL's docs are frequently wrong).
  3. Record the concrete observation in NOTES.md — the endpoint, what you sent, what came back, and the date — before writing code that depends on it.

Known landmines (already in NOTES.md)

  • fields is mandatory — omit it and MAL returns near-empty nodes and drops list_status.
  • Rate-limit = HTTP 403 ("DoS detected"), not 429.
  • PKCE is plain-only — MAL does not support S256, which rules out most off-the-shelf OAuth clients and is why the TokenManager / MAL_ACCESS_TOKEN paths exist instead of a login flow.
  • Rotated refresh tokens stay valid — load-bearing for the stdio distribution, since every client launch re-submits the same MAL_REFRESH_TOKEN from the env. Re-verify before releases.
  • DELETE returns [] (non-dict body) with 200 and is idempotent in practice despite docs claiming 404.
  • Redirects are treated as failures on API calls (following one could fake empty/success results).
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

verify-mal-api-fact is a skill published in the GitHub repository UmutKDev/myanimelist-mcp (1 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 43 tokens to every session and 437 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
