hunting-server-side-prototype-pollution

hunting-server-side-prototype-pollution is a skill for Claude Code from UnboundCompute/security-agent-skills. It costs 171 tokens per session (2,059 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A security review for server-side prototype pollution in JavaScript and TypeScript services. This bug occurs when untrusted input changes shared object defaults, affecting later property reads.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect request parsers, deep merges, clones, and path-based assignments for exploitable prototype changes.
Why use it?
It connects unsafe input handling to the later code that could be changed by the injected value, rather than treating the initial write as the whole problem.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Opus 5.5 $0.00068 $0.00824

Security

Grade A, and why

hunting-server-side-prototype-pollution scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Hunting server-side prototype pollution: when one request changes every object

In JavaScript, every plain object inherits from Object.prototype, so writing to that shared prototype changes the default value of a property on every object in the process. Server-side prototype pollution happens when untrusted input carries a __proto__, constructor, or prototype key into a recursive merge, a deep clone, or a path-based set that follows the key down to the prototype. The write by itself is a primitive; the impact comes later, when some other code reads a property that was never set and now returns the attacker's injected default. That gadget read can flip an authorization flag, inject an argument into a spawned command, or change a template or query. You find it by locating the pollution primitives and then the gadget reads they enable.

When to use

  • A Node.js or server-side TypeScript service merges, clones, or path-assigns untrusted structured input.
  • A parser or utility recurses into keys from a request body, query string, or JSON document.
  • Later code reads object properties that may be unset, where an injected default would change behavior.

Scope check

Test prototype pollution only against services you own or are authorized to assess, on non-production infrastructure. Pollution is process-wide and can affect concurrent requests, so treat every confirming write as a change to shared state within the authorized scope, and prefer an isolated instance. If you can't name the authorization, stop.

The loop

  1. Establish the pollution primitives first. Inventory every operation that could write an attacker-controlled key down to the prototype: recursive or deep merges, deep clones, path-based setters that split a dotted or bracketed path, and body or query parsers that build nested objects. This is the false-positive killer: without a primitive that reaches __proto__ or constructor.prototype, an isolated gadget read is not exploitable. Name the primitives first.

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
