context-manager

context-manager is a skill for Claude Code from valsecchi75/project-scaffolder. It costs 65 tokens per session (644 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A session-management guide that tracks how much conversation and file context an agent has used. Near a configured limit, it writes a handoff and creates a prompt for continuing in a fresh chat.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after tasks or when context becomes large to update handoff files, refresh priorities, log the session, and prepare the next session.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk that a long session loses important details or produces lower-quality work as its context fills up.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00065 $0.00644
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00322
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00129
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

context-manager scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Context Manager

Overview

Keeps sessions inside a healthy context window. The wiki is long-term memory; the chat is working memory that must be renewed BEFORE quality degrades (context rot).

Core principle: hand off proactively at the threshold, never reactively at the limit.

Threshold Check (after every completed task)

  • Threshold: 300k tokens by default — configurable via the "Context threshold" line in the project CLAUDE.md.
  • Estimate consumption from: system context warnings, number/size of files read this session, conversation length. When in doubt, assume you are CLOSER to the threshold than you think.
  • Below threshold → continue normally.
  • Above threshold → no new activities. Finish the current activity if nearly done, then run the Handoff Procedure.

Handoff Procedure

  1. Update wiki/handoff.md (≤80 lines): done, in progress, next, files to read.
  2. Update wiki/priorities.md (≤100 lines): checkbox states current.
  3. Generate the Continuation Prompt (template below, ≤40 lines) and print it as the final message so the user can paste it into a fresh chat.
  4. Update daily-log/YYYY-MM-DD.md.

Continuation Prompt Template

# Continue: {project} — Phase {N}

Read in order (nothing else):
1. CLAUDE.md
2. wiki/handoff.md
3. docs/phases/PHASE-{N}-execution.md

State: activities {list} DONE; activity {n} IN PROGRESS at {exact point}.
Next: activity {n} — {description}. VERIFY: {criterion}.
Mode: {Normal/Autopilot/Autonomous}. Context threshold: {X}k.
Do NOT re-read: {stable files already processed}.

Context Minimalism Rules

Injected into every generated CLAUDE.md:

  1. Wrong path → /rewind + re-prompt with the lesson learned. Never pile inline corrections on a polluted context.
  2. Between large tasks → /clear + written brief (the Execution Doc activity is the brief).
  3. /compact always with a hint ("keep decisions and current activity state").
  4. Inject the minimum: link wiki pages instead of pasting them; excerpts over full files.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

context-manager is a skill published in the GitHub repository valsecchi75/project-scaffolder (9 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 65 tokens to every session and 644 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
