vellum-terminal-sessions

vellum-terminal-sessions is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from vellum-ai/vellum-assistant. It costs 41 tokens per session (591 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for managing persistent tmux terminal sessions. Tmux keeps shell sessions running so long tasks can continue after the terminal is closed.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create, inspect, write to, list, attach to, and close named terminal sessions in a sandbox or on the host machine.
Why use it?
It prevents long-running builds, servers, and other terminal work from being lost when a connection ends.

About the project

Vellum Assistant is a personal AI assistant that remembers information about users, learns their preferences, and takes actions across connected apps. It is intended for people who want an assistant that can manage conversations, unfinished work, and proactive notifications over time. The catalogue skills, hooks, instruction, and setting configure or extend how the assistant works.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00041 $0.00591
Opus 5 $0.00020 $0.00296
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00118
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00059

Measured 9d ago against content hash b394190e27dc, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-12, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

vellum-terminal-sessions scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/setup-auto-tmux.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Overview

This skill manages persistent terminal sessions via tmux. Two modes:

Sandbox Mode Host Mode
Where tmux runs In the assistant's sandbox On the user's host machine
How user connects vellum terminal attach <session-name> User opens their own terminal
Assistant access Direct (bash tool) Via host_bash
Best for Long-running builds, servers, always-on tasks Work needing host access (e.g. SwiftUI builds, host-local services)

Default: Use Sandbox Mode unless the task specifically requires host access. Details: sandbox-sessions.md · host-sessions.md · tmux-best-practices.md

Prerequisites

Sandbox Mode: No setup needed — tmux is available in the sandbox.

Host Mode: Requires tmux on the host — see host-sessions.md.

Workflow: Orchestrating Multiple Sessions

  • List all sessions: tmux list-sessions to get names and current commands
  • Read each: tmux capture-pane -t NAME -p -S -50 (30-50 lines is usually enough)
  • Summarize before acting: "Build done, tests at 73%, deploy waiting for confirmation"
  • Act on the user's instructions
Files

What ships with it

5 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
