reading-zotero-documents

reading-zotero-documents is a skill for Claude Code from virtualarchitectures/Local-Zotero-MCP. It costs 88 tokens per session (739 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool for reading the full text of PDF and EPUB papers stored in a local Zotero library, a reference manager for research. It can extract quotes, evidence, summaries, and comparisons.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to summarize papers, find supporting passages, extract evidence, or compare arguments and methods across papers. Zotero must be running locally with its Local API enabled.
Why use it?
It lets you work with the paper itself instead of relying only on its title, metadata, or abstract. It can also read attachments Zotero has not indexed for search.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00088 $0.00739
Opus 5 $0.00044 $0.00369
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00148
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00074

Security

Grade A, and why

reading-zotero-documents scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 57 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Reading Zotero documents

Requires the Zotero desktop app running locally with the Local API enabled (see the searching-zotero-library skill for the setting). These tools read the resolved attachment file directly with PyMuPDF — they work on any PDF/EPUB attachment, not just ones Zotero has indexed for full-text search.

Workflow

  1. Find the attachment's item key: get_item_children(item_key) on the parent item, and pick the child with itemType: "attachment" and a PDF/EPUB contentType. If you already have an attachment key directly (e.g. from a prior search), skip this step.
  2. Read it:
    read_document(item_key=attachment_key)
    read_document(item_key=attachment_key, remove_headers_footers=True)
    read_document(item_key=attachment_key, start_page=21, max_pages=20) # page through a long doc

    read_document returns {total_pages, start_page, end_page, text}. Default max_pages is 20 — call again with a higher start_page to keep reading.
  3. To save a copy instead of reading inline, use convert_document(item_key, output_path, output_format="txt"|"pdf"). remove_headers_footers only applies to output_format="txt"; PDF output always preserves the original pages as-is.

remove_headers_footers detects lines that repeat near the top/bottom of most pages (running titles, page numbers, journal watermarks) and strips them. Turn it on when doing anything that reads across many pages at once — quoting, summarizing, comparing — since repeated headers otherwise pollute the extracted text. Leave it off if the user wants a faithful, unedited dump of a page's content.

Deciding whether to read the full text at all

Read the PDF when: the user wants detailed analysis of arguments/evidence, specific quotes or figures, a methodology comparison, or the abstract genuinely doesn't answer the question.

Stay with metadata (search_items / get_item) when: the user wants a landscape overview, is identifying themes across many papers, or is still in an early exploration phase. Reading full text for 20+ papers back-to-back is usually the wrong call — narrow to the 3–5 most relevant first.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
