gum-status

gum-status is a skill for Claude Code from Volchunovich/gum. It costs 15 tokens per session (1,585 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A GUM session inspector that shows active modules, their full rules, overrides, and hook settings. GUM modules are reusable instructions that shape how a coding agent behaves.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to check active modules, verify a module is enabled, inspect team or personal overrides, or investigate why the agent is following—or not following—a rule.
Why use it?
It replaces uncertainty about which rules are affecting the agent with the actual active instructions and settings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00015 $0.01585
Opus 5 $0.00008 $0.00792
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00317
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00159

Security

Grade A, and why

gum-status scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

GUM Status

This skill shows exactly what modules are active RIGHT NOW and what rules the agent is following. Not module names -- the actual expanded rules content, override state, and hook configuration. The user should see the full picture of what governs agent behavior in this session.

Announce at start: "I'm using the gum-status skill to show your active GUM context."

The Iron Law

SHOW THE RULES, NOT JUST THE NAMES.

"You have 4 active modules" is useless. The user needs to see what those modules SAY. Always expand and display the actual rules content.

When to Use

  • User says "status", "what modules are active", "show my rules", "what's gum doing"
  • User wants to verify a module is enabled before relying on it
  • User is confused about why the agent is or isn't following a rule
  • User wants to check override state (team vs personal vs default)
  • Before debugging compliance issues

Use this ESPECIALLY when:

  • User says "why isn't the agent doing X" -- status reveals if the rule exists and is active
  • User switched projects and wants to see what's active here
  • User just ran npx get-gum toggle and wants to verify

Process

Phase 1: Read All State Sources

Read these in order:

  1. Run npx get-gum list --gum-dir ~/.gum via Bash -- get all modules and their enabled/disabled status
  2. Read ~/.claude/rules/gum/*.md -- these are the synced active rules (auto-loaded, no permission needed)
  3. Read .gum.json in current directory -- team-level overrides (if exists)
  4. Read .gum.local.json in current directory -- personal overrides (if exists)

Phase 2: Apply Override Priority

Overrides stack. Later sources win:

module.yaml (default) < .gum.json (team) < .gum.local.json (personal)

MUST apply this correctly. A module enabled in module.yaml but disabled in .gum.json is DISABLED. A module disabled in .gum.json but re-enabled in .gum.local.json is ENABLED.

Track the effective state AND the source of that state:

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

gum-status is a skill published in the GitHub repository Volchunovich/gum (5 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 15 tokens to every session and 1,585 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
