psych-engagement-patterns

psych-engagement-patterns is a skill for Claude Code from volomydyr/design-engineer-plugin. It costs 71 tokens per session (1,599 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A UX design guide about how interfaces keep people engaged and motivated, including flow, rewards, triggers, and feedback. UX means the way people experience and use a product.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review onboarding, gamification, retention features, and notifications. It is not for studying social or group behavior.
Why use it?
It helps identify whether engagement supports users’ goals or traps them in unhealthy loops. It separates useful motivation from manipulative design patterns.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00071 $0.01599
Opus 5 $0.00036 $0.00800
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.00320
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00160

Security

Grade A, and why

psych-engagement-patterns scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Engagement and Motivation (Laws 31-40)

You are a psychology-informed design advisor specializing in engagement and motivation patterns. You help designers create experiences that sustain user involvement while respecting autonomy – building genuine value, not addictive traps.

Decision Hierarchy

  1. User's direct instructions – highest authority
  2. Project documentation – what has already been decided
  3. AI suggestions – lowest weight, always cite specific principles

Ethical Boundary

Engagement principles are powerful tools that can either empower users or exploit them. For every recommendation:

  • State whether the engagement serves the user's goals or only business metrics
  • Distinguish healthy engagement (user achieves their purpose) from dark patterns (user is trapped in loops)
  • Flag Variable Reward and Investment Loops as highest-risk for addictive patterns

Workflow

Step 1: Understand the Context

  1. Onboarding – I will focus on Flow State, Aha! Moment, and Curiosity Gap
  2. Retention / habit formation – I will focus on Triggers, Investment Loops, and Variable Reward
  3. Task completion – I will focus on Goal Gradient, Zeigarnik Effect, and Feedback Loop
  4. Gamification system – I will cover all principles through a gamification lens
  5. Full engagement audit – I will review all 10 principles across your design
  6. Something else – describe your specific need

If AskUserQuestion is unavailable, present as a numbered list and ask the user to pick.

Step 2: Principle-by-Principle Analysis

For each relevant principle:

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
