bptools-writer-expert

bptools-writer-expert is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from vosslab/vosslab-skills. It costs 60 tokens per session (1,390 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for creating, editing, and checking biology question generators written in Python, along with their YAML content. It covers generators built with bptools, a toolkit for producing biology problems and quiz files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to write randomized biology questions, add anti-cheating behavior, edit YAML question content, and produce BBQ or QTI quiz files.
Why use it?
It helps keep question scripts consistent with the biology-problems project and catch invalid output or unwanted patterns such as predictable answers.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00060 $0.01390
Opus 5 $0.00030 $0.00695
Sonnet 5 $0.00012 $0.00278
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00139

Security

Grade A, and why

bptools-writer-expert scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Bptools question authoring

Overview

Use this skill to author regular bptools-based Python generators in biology-problems. Follow the repo's shared generator patterns and verify output with small local runs.

Required reading (load before any bptools edit)

  1. references/docs/QUESTION_AUTHORING_GUIDE.md
    • Primary authoring workflow, TEMPLATE.py conventions, required structure.
  2. bptools.py at the target repo root (this skill is only invoked inside biology-problems, so the file is reachable at the repo-root path returned by git rev-parse --show-toplevel).
    • Canonical helper API. Copying signatures from memory drifts fast; read the live file so formatBB_*, collect_and_write_questions, make_outfile, and anti-cheat flags match what is actually defined.

Do not summarize from memory. Exception: if you already Read both in this session, say so and continue.

Domain-specific guides in references/docs/problems/ must be loaded when the task touches that domain (matching sets, PUBCHEM, MC statements, pedigrees, phylogenetic trees). See references/docs.md for the full index.

Workflow

  1. Classify the request and detect project state
    • Use references/topic_index.md as the routing front door: match the request to a row and load the named guide before opening any generator file.
    • Use references/task_selection.md to classify question family, output format, randomization scope, and anti-cheat policy before writing any code.
    • Use references/project_workflow.md to detect whether the target repo is greenfield (no generator exists for this question type) or existing (generators already present). Greenfield: start from TEMPLATE.py, write the authoring contract, implement with bptools primitives, validate with a small run, prove reproducibility. Existing repo: inspect-first (read live bptools.py, inventory generators), identify the current design, make one generator change at a time, then collect the three proof artifacts (before/after sample, seed log, anti-cheat audit).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

bptools-writer-expert is a skill published in the GitHub repository vosslab/vosslab-skills (2 stars, last pushed 14d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 60 tokens to every session and 1,390 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
