webwork-writer-expert

webwork-writer-expert is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from vosslab/vosslab-skills. It costs 55 tokens per session (1,302 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions and tools for creating and checking WeBWorK questions. WeBWorK is an online system that gives and grades mathematical exercises, while PG and PGML are its question-writing formats.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to write, edit, randomize, grade, or lint WeBWorK PG/PGML problems and diagnose rendering failures.
Why use it?
It helps avoid common errors in randomized questions, grading logic, allowed HTML, and rendering by requiring the relevant project guidance and checks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.01302
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00651
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00260
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00130

Security

Grade A, and why

webwork-writer-expert scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (references/scripts/contrast_calculator.py, references/scripts/lint_pg_via_renderer_api.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

WebWork question authoring

Overview

Use this skill to author or adjust PG/PGML problems with the local WebWork renderer, repo rules, and the docs in references/.

Required reading (load before any PGML edit)

  1. references/docs/HOW_TO_LINT.md
  2. references/docs/PG_COMMON_PITFALLS.md
  3. references/docs/WEBWORK_PROBLEM_AUTHOR_GUIDE.md

Do not summarize from memory. Do not skip because "you already know PGML." Agents that skip these docs ship problems with well-known pitfalls that fail renderer lint and waste human review time.

Exception: if you have already Read all three files earlier in the same session, you do not need to re-read them. State explicitly that you already loaded them this session before continuing.

Workflow

  1. Classify the request using references/task_selection.md, then route to the correct guide via references/topic_index.md. Both files must be consulted before opening any PG/PGML file.
  2. Determine project shape using references/project_workflow.md:
    • Greenfield: no existing .pg/.pgml files in the target repo. Write the WebWork design contract first, then scaffold problems following the greenfield path.
    • Improve existing: existing .pg/.pgml files are present. Inspect the existing files, renderer harness, and OPL headers first; then apply changes one category at a time following the existing-repo path.
  3. Satisfy the Required reading block above. This is step zero of editing; nothing else happens first.
  4. Identify the target repo and file, then read any additional relevant doc references from references/docs.md for the question type at hand.
  5. Apply the PGML structure and rules from the WebWork author guide.
  6. Make edits in the problem file and update docs/CHANGELOG.md directly when this skill runs as a standalone task; under delegate-manager-to-subagents, dispatch a docs subagent to add the entry.
  7. Render with -r using the local renderer API to visually confirm layout and checkbox behavior (prerequisite).
  8. Lint or render with the local renderer API when the change affects PGML output.
  9. Validate against the oracles in references/testing_and_oracles.md: lint output clean, visual render correct, grading test passes, seed reproducible.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
