pbir-themes

pbir-themes is a skill for Claude Code from wardawgmalvicious/agent-config. It costs 196 tokens per session (3,378 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A reference for editing Power BI report theme JSON files. Power BI is Microsoft's tool for building interactive data reports, and a theme sets default colors and formatting inherited by the report's charts and other visuals.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to edit color palettes, semantic colors, and other theme properties, choose or layer a base theme, and update theme files in a Power BI report project.
Why use it?
It helps you change report-wide styling in the correct theme file before adjusting individual visuals. It also explains where built-in and custom themes are stored and how the report references them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00196 $0.03378
Opus 5 $0.00098 $0.01689
Sonnet 5 $0.00039 $0.00676
Haiku 4.5 $0.00020 $0.00338

Security

Grade A, and why

pbir-themes scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

PBIR Theme Reference

Themes define default formatting inherited by all visuals. Review the theme BEFORE editing individual visuals.

File Locations

Theme Path
Base (built-in) Report.Report/StaticResources/SharedResources/BaseThemes/<Name>.json
Custom Report.Report/StaticResources/RegisteredResources/<Name>.json

Both referenced in report.json:

  "baseTheme": {"name": "CY24SU10", "type": "SharedResources"},
  "customTheme": {"name": "MyTheme.json", "type": "RegisteredResources"}
}

Base Themes (verified 2026-09-08)

Custom themes layer on top of a base theme. Three are shipped:

Base theme Status Notes
Fluent 2 GA — default for new reports, Desktop and service Modern Fluent 2 styling. New pages default to 1920x1080 (initial page stays 1280x720). Adds chart / button / slicer / small-multiples style presets.
Classic 2026 Previous default base theme Incremental refresh of CY24SU10-era defaults.
Classic 2018 Legacy compatibility Original base theme; reports created before 2026.

Switch via View ribbon → toggle on the Theme pane → Theme settingsBase theme dropdown. The Theme pane replaced the Customize-theme dialog at GA; it is sectioned as Theme settings (import / export / remove), Colors (palette, data, structural, sentiment, divergent), Text, Visual properties (background, border, header icons, tooltip, shadow, padding), Page (canvas settings, background, wallpaper), Filter pane, and Filter cards — the same surface a custom theme JSON encodes. An "Update to the latest base theme" banner with an Update theme button appears when a newer base ships; the Reset to default tile in the Themes dropdown removes the custom theme without touching per-visual formatting.

Announced GA in the August 2026 update; page confirmed GA on 2026-09-07. No Desktop build number was verified.

The published theme JSON schema referenced by visualStyles tracks the latest base — current is reportThemeSchema-2.149.json (under microsoft/powerbi-desktop-samples on GitHub).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
