design-context

design-context is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from WellApp-ai/Well. It costs 18 tokens per session (616 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A design-review guide that gathers existing interface patterns from a design system, Storybook, and the codebase. Storybook is a catalogue of reusable interface components and their documented states.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before showing wireframes or making interface changes. It helps find matching components, their variants, loading and error states, and the project’s design rules.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk of proposing or building screens that conflict with the product’s existing look, spacing, components, or interaction behaviour.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00018 $0.00616
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00308
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00123
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00062

Security

Grade A, and why

design-context scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Design Context Skill

Ensures wireframes and UI decisions leverage existing patterns from the design system, Storybook, and codebase.

When to Use

  • Before presenting wireframes (Ask mode DIVERGE)
  • Before implementing UI changes (Agent mode)
  • At every DIVERGE Loop to stay grounded in existing patterns

Instructions

Phase 1: Design System Check

Read the design system documentation:

Read /docs/design-system/components.md
Read /docs/design-system/spacing.md
Read /docs/design-system/colors.md (if color decisions needed)
Read /docs/design-system/interactions.md (if interaction patterns needed)

Note applicable:

  • Design tokens (h-13, px-4, gap-3)
  • Component patterns (Button variants, DataTable, Dialog)
  • Spacing conventions (p-4 for cards, gap-6 for sections)

Phase 2: Storybook Patterns

Find existing component stories:

Glob **/*.stories.tsx

Identify:

  • Components matching current wireframe needs
  • Existing variants and props
  • Documented states (loading, error, empty)

Key story locations:

  • /src/stories/ - General component stories
  • /features/*/components/*.stories.tsx - Feature-specific stories

Phase 3: Codebase Search

Search for similar UI patterns:

SemanticSearch "How is [pattern] implemented in the codebase?"

Look for:

  • Similar features already built
  • Reusable hooks and utilities
  • Existing layout patterns

Phase 4: Library Documentation (Context7 MCP)

Query library docs for unfamiliar patterns:

1. resolve-library-id with libraryName (e.g., "radix-ui")
2. query-docs with libraryId and specific question

Common libraries:

  • /radix-ui/primitives - Dialog, Dropdown, Select patterns
  • /tanstack/query - Data fetching patterns
  • /tanstack/table - Table patterns

Output Format

After running this skill, output:

## Design Context

| Source | Relevant Patterns |
|--------|-------------------|
| Design System | [tokens, components] |
| Storybook | [stories that apply] |
| Codebase | [existing implementations] |
| Libraries | [patterns from docs] |

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

design-context is a skill published in the GitHub repository WellApp-ai/Well (340 stars, last pushed 29d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 616 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
