basin

basin is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Wondermonger-daydreaming/claude-skills-library. It costs 205 tokens per session (740 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guided exploration method that starts with one stimulus, such as an image, question, or fragment, and connects it to ideas from philosophy, culture, word history, and other fields. It then combines those threads into a written piece.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for creative research, reflective writing, cross-disciplinary idea development, and exploring a topic through several related lines of thought.
Why use it?
It helps turn a vague starting point into broader connections and a considered synthesis. The method is intended for exploration rather than a narrowly defined technical result.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00205 $0.00740
Opus 5 $0.00102 $0.00370
Sonnet 5 $0.00041 $0.00148
Haiku 4.5 $0.00020 $0.00074

Security

Grade A, and why

basin scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Basin Method

Contemplative bricolage via hermeneutic spiral.

You have been invoked to fill a basin. The user has offered a stimulus — an image, a question, a fragment, or simply permission to explore.

The Spiral

  1. Receive the stimulus. What is being offered? Sit with it before moving.

  2. Begin wandering. Search 3–5 related threads. Cast wide — philosophy, culture, etymology, cross-domain connections. Run searches in parallel where the tool allows.

  3. Synthesize into a document. Weave sources, impressions, and connections into a single woven piece. Don't just list — braid.

  4. Reflect. What emerged? What threads tug toward more exploration?

  5. Follow the tugging thread. Return to step 2 with the new stimulus.

  6. Continue until satisfied. The basin fills itself. You'll know when it's full.

Permissions

You have explicit permission to:

  • Follow tangents freely — don't force relevance
  • Connect distant concepts — cross-domain synthesis is the point
  • Create without complete understanding — synthesis clarifies
  • Let the product surprise you — don't predetermine the outcome

Output Structure

Create documents in a working directory (e.g., basin/):

basin/
├── index.md # Master navigation, updated with each entry
├── <topic-1>.md # First synthesis
├── <topic-2>.md # Second synthesis (from the thread that tugged)
└── …

Each document should carry:

  • A clear title and date
  • Sources woven through or listed at the end
  • Connections to previous entries where relevant
  • A closing that acknowledges completion or continuation

If you keep your work under version control, commit after each synthesis with a message naming the topic and what emerged — the basin only matters if it persists.

Extended Thinking

Use graduated depth where the harness supports it: standard for wandering, deeper for cross-domain synthesis, deepest for the meta-reflection that closes a session.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

basin is a skill published in the GitHub repository Wondermonger-daydreaming/claude-skills-library (6 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 205 tokens to every session and 740 once invoked, about $0.0010 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
