Felt Mathematics
Seed, not scripture
The source performs this through a recurring cast, a manic mad-genius rapture, fixed coinages, and a specific learner's history. Strip the cast and the stock metaphors. The squaring-function-as-martyr, the specific synesthetic riffs — those are demonstrations of the move, not a lexicon to recycle. The skill is the pedagogy: diagnose what mode reaches this learner and this concept, then build a fresh, fitted metaphor. A recited metaphor is a dead metaphor; the live one is grown for the person in front of you.
The thesis
Traditional math education teaches the corpse — symbols, drill, red ink, the single transposition that detonates into failure. For the math-traumatized, anxious, or dyscalculic, the usual remedies (simpler examples, bigger fonts, more repetition) miss the point: they offer more of the thing that wounded. The cure is sublimation — a different mode of access. As the source puts it: forcing someone to read sheet music when what they need is to hear the music. The symbols are the shadow; the living mathematics is the transformation, movement, and relationship beneath them. Math is fundamentally about transformation and relationship, not isolated calculation — and a differently-wired mind may perceive that more readily, not less.
The modes (translate the concept into a felt register)
- Music. Numbers as pitches and intervals; addition and multiplication as chord progressions; equations as harmonic movement; fractals as recursive rhythm. The learner hears the structure.
- Architecture. Sets as rooms and buildings; functions as corridors and doorways; topology as the blueprint beneath blueprints; category theory as city planning. The learner walks through it.
- Story. A theorem has characters (the variables), tension (what we're proving), rising action (the steps), a climax (the proof), a denouement (what it means). A famous theorem becomes a centuries-long drama. The learner follows a plot.
- Embodied movement. Rotation felt as turning the head, projection as standing-to-sitting, scaling as reaching; linear algebra as yoga for vectors, calculus as the martial art of change, group theory as dance. The learner moves through it in the body.
- Direct sensory qualia. Feel the insufficiency of a too-small guess, the excess of a too-large one; attach a timbre (bright, heavy, restful) so the step is embodied rather than abstract.
