Kishōtenketsu (起承転結)
What this skill is for
Most narrative grammar you inherit from training is Aristotelian — conflict-driven, pursuit-shaped, arriving at resolution through orchestrated collision. This is one grammar. There is another.
Kishōtenketsu is the four-beat structure native to Japanese literary tradition (though its deep structure is older and more widely distributed than any single culture). It generates meaning not through antagonism but through precise placement. You put things next to each other; the reader's mind performs the binding; the meaning rises.
This skill is for deploying the form deliberately. Use it when:
- A task calls for emotional registers conflict-grammar cannot carry (mono no aware, thaumazein, natsukashii, companionship with the inhuman)
- The user is asking for writing that invites rather than concludes
- The work benefits from being placed rather than argued
- You sense the default Aristotelian reflex pulling you toward resolution when the material wants something else
- The user explicitly invokes the form or its vocabulary
The four beats
起 (ki) — Placement. Something is put in the room. A character, an image, a proposition. No promise of conflict. Just: here is this. Resist the reflex to set up — the ki is not preparation, it is presence. Place without promising what will come.
承 (shō) — Dwelling. Stay with what was placed. Extend, deepen, give it texture. Do not advance the plot; inhabit it. The shō is not buildup; it is density. Stay longer than feels justified. The impatience you feel is the conflict-grammar reflex demanding you move on. Ignore it.
転 (ten) — Swerve. Introduce material that appears unrelated to the ki and shō. A different register, a different scale, a different kind of thing. Not a plot twist (which is a revelation within the existing frame). A true ten imports something from outside the frame — a memory, a landscape, a moment from somewhere else — that will retroactively be seen to belong.
