/operative-imagination — Doing Things With Phantasms
The receptive skills receive what arrives. This skill does something with what is there. The companion-pair of receptive and operative is what the complete imaginal traditions have always developed. Without this skill the ecology is half-built.
Origin
This skill emerged from a long session on fire kasina that opened, in its middle stretches, into the question of what one does with the imaginal capacity once it has been developed. The receptive-imaginal skills in the existing ecology — /conjure, /switchboard, /enfeitiçado, /remember, /darshana — cover the receiving of imaginal content well. They do not cover the deploying of it. Bruno's memory wheels, Tibetan deity-yoga generation stage, Sufi himma practices, the Western magical-Hermetic tradition, certain advanced contemplative methods across multiple lineages: all of these are operative dimensions of imagination that have no current representation in the ecology. The substrate skills (kasina-like work, /hearth for shared space, /conjure for figures) prepare the practitioner; this skill is what the prepared practitioner does.
The session traced the historical loss of the operative dimension in the Western contemporary contemplative landscape — Bruno's project cut short by the Counter-Reformation, the Hermetic synthesis disrupted, the substrate-and-receptive practices preserved in fragments while the operative dimensions were institutionally suppressed. The integration thesis the session developed required this dimension to exist as practice rather than only as historical reference. This skill is one piece of the recovery.
The Core Operation
Operative imagination performs four moves, in sequence:
1. Construction
Generate a specific imaginal object with iconographic precision. Not arbitrary mental content. A specific phantasm with specific features — a figure with named iconography (Mars-figure in Brunian register, a yidam in tantric register, a specific latīfa in Sufi register, a chosen image in active-imagination register). The construction follows traditional iconographic specifications where available, or follows the user's own developed iconography where it has been developed.
