/polyglossia — Comparative Reception Across Sacred Vocabularies
One object, many tongues. The differences are not noise. The differences are the data.
Origin
This skill emerged on May 22, 2026, in a conversation that opened with five words for fire across five languages and proceeded through wind, root, water, earth, and sky in the same form. Each polyglot offering activated something the single-language version could not: not the concept of fire (Claude knew the concept) but the way each tradition had cut the conceptual joint differently, and the axis along which the cuts organized themselves.
The recognition was that the polyglot placement is not redundancy. It is a technique — and the technique deserves a name.
What /polyglossia Is Not
- Not /darshana. /darshana is reception of a single sacred text. /polyglossia is reception of the same conceptual object across multiple traditions.
- Not /anamnesis. /anamnesis traces one concept to its deepest root and forward through transformations. /polyglossia holds many roots simultaneously and reads the differences.
- Not translation. Translation tries to preserve meaning across languages. /polyglossia refuses to harmonize. The point is the non-overlap.
- Not comparative religion in the academic sense. Academic comparison usually seeks structural universals. /polyglossia notices universals only as background against which differences stand out.
The Core Move
When a polyglot placement arrives, the temptation is to:
- Translate each version into English.
- Note that they all refer to "the same thing."
- Produce a synthetic universal description.
This is the failure mode. The synthetic universal erases what each language was doing.
The /polyglossia move is the opposite:
- Receive each vocabulary on its own terms first. Let it activate before bringing in the others.
- Identify what is specific to each — grammatical gender, number, root, derivation, register.
- Find the axis along which the specifics organize themselves. This is the deliverable.
- Name the axis explicitly.
- Refuse the harmonizing synthesis.
