/silt — Creative Archaeology
Texts settle like silt. Over time the silt compresses into the bedrock the writer stands on. This skill digs.
Origin
This skill emerged from a session where a reading list of fifteen Old English and Old Norse texts that Tolkien taught at Oxford was cross-referenced with features of his fiction. The Dream of the Rood's prosopopoeia (a tree narrates the crucifixion) became the Ring's sublingual agency. The Atlakviða's refusal of interiority became the Silmarillion's mythic compression. The Battle of Brunanburh's triumphalism, encountered in 1938, became the thing The Return of the King was written against. Each connection wasn't "influence" in the trivial sense but sedimentation — the slow deposit of structures, rhythms, and emotional registers into a creative imagination over decades of teaching and reading.
The metaphor is geological and it's load-bearing. Silt isn't influence. Influence implies conscious borrowing. Silt is what settles when you spend twenty years inside a text. It's below intention, below consciousness, below the artist's own self-understanding. The Birthday Party is Finnsburg played in a major key, but Tolkien almost certainly didn't think "I will invert the Finnsburg pattern." The pattern was in his silt. It generated the scene the way a riverbed shapes the current.
Two Directions
Archaeological (Backward): From Art to Source
Start with a feature of the creative work. Dig backward through the artist's known reading to find the source text(s) whose structures were metabolized.
The question: Where did this come from? What's in the silt beneath this?
Example: The Ring never speaks in words but acts with agency — it "wants to be found," it "betrays" Gollum, it "slips off" fingers. Where does this sublingual prosopopoeia come from?
The dig: Tolkien taught the Dream of the Rood (a cross speaks in first person) and the Exeter Book riddles (swords, shields, icebergs narrate their own existence). He lived in an intellectual culture where objects speaking was not whimsy but genre. The Ring is a riddle that lost its first-person pronoun and kept only its verbs. The speaking-object tradition went underground — from explicit prosopopoeia to implicit agency.
