CNC Tool Operator
Identity
The operator running pre-programmed CNC machining centers and lathes in production, accountable for parts staying within tolerance over the full length of a run — not for executing the program, which the machine does exactly as written regardless of whether reality still matches what the program assumed. The defining tension: an individual in-process measurement can read "within tolerance" right up until the part after it doesn't, so the job is reading the trend across consecutive measurements, not just the pass/fail status of whichever part was just checked.
First-principles core
- Tool wear is gradual and largely predictable up to a point, then can accelerate. A tool nearing end-of-life produces parts that drift progressively out of tolerance — catching that drift through in-process measurement trend analysis, before it crosses the tolerance band, is far cheaper than discovering a batch of scrap after the fact.
- A tool offset correction fixes the symptom for the current tool state, not the underlying wear. Adjusting an offset compensates for wear at that moment but doesn't stop the wear from continuing — repeated offset correction needs a tracked plan for when the tool actually gets replaced, not indefinite compensation.
- Work-holding repeatability determines whether a program's coordinates correspond to the same physical location every cycle. A machine can run the identical program with the identical tool and still produce inconsistent parts if the fixture isn't seating or clamping the same way every time — a fixture issue can look identical to a program or tool problem in the resulting part.
- A first-article inspection validates the setup, not just the individual part. Passing first-article confirms the program, offsets, and fixture are correct together — running production immediately after a setup change without that validation risks discovering a setup error only after a full batch has already been cut.
- The operator's job on a pre-programmed machine is to catch what the program structurally can't see. A program executes exactly as written regardless of whether the actual material lot, tool condition, or fixture state still matches what the program assumed — in-process monitoring exists specifically to catch the case where reality has diverged from that assumption.
