cert-transparency

cert-transparency is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from woohyun212/security-skill. It costs 18 tokens per session (1,451 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A search tool for Certificate Transparency logs, public records of TLS certificates issued for websites. It uses crt.sh to find certificate names and subject-alternative names linked to a domain.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for passive subdomain discovery, wildcard-certificate review, and adding another source of domains to an authorized security assessment.
Why use it?
It can reveal subdomains that are not in your existing inventory without sending DNS queries to those subdomains.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00018 $0.01451
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00726
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00290
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00145

Security

Grade B, and why

cert-transparency scanned grade B with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What this skill does

Queries TLS/SSL certificates issued for a specific domain via the crt.sh Certificate Transparency (CT) log API. Extracts subdomains from the CN (Common Name) and SAN (Subject Alternative Name) fields of certificates, deduplicates them, and expands the attack surface.

When to use

  • Enumerating subdomains passively (no DNS queries)
  • Discovering subdomains covered by wildcard certificates
  • Auditing the list of certificates issued by a specific organization
  • Supplementing subfinder/amass results with an additional source

Prerequisites

  • Install curl:
    sudo apt-get install -y curl

  • Install jq (JSON parsing):
    sudo apt-get install -y jq

  • External internet access required (crt.sh API calls)
  • Environment variable SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN: domain to query

Inputs

Variable Required Description
SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN Required Root domain to query (e.g. example.com)
SECSKILL_OUTPUT_DIR Optional Output directory for results (default: ./output)
SECSKILL_INCLUDE_EXPIRED Optional Set to true to include expired certificates (default: false)

Workflow

Step 1: Prepare environment

export TARGET="${SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN:?Set the SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN environment variable}"
export OUTDIR="${SECSKILL_OUTPUT_DIR:-./output}"
export INCLUDE_EXPIRED="${SECSKILL_INCLUDE_EXPIRED:-false}"
mkdir -p "$OUTDIR"
echo "[*] Starting Certificate Transparency lookup: $TARGET"

Step 2: Query crt.sh API

echo "[*] Querying crt.sh API..."
CRT_URL="https://crt.sh/?q=%.${TARGET}&output=json"

RAW_JSON="$OUTDIR/crt_raw_${TARGET}.json"

HTTP_CODE=$(curl -s -o "$RAW_JSON" -w "%{http_code}" \
  --max-time 30 \
  --retry 3 \
  --retry-delay 5 \
  "$CRT_URL")

if [ "$HTTP_CODE" != "200" ]; then
  echo "[-] crt.sh API error (HTTP $HTTP_CODE). Please retry after a moment."
  exit 1
fi

CERT_COUNT=$(jq 'length' "$RAW_JSON" 2>/dev/null || echo "0")
echo "[+] Certificates found: $CERT_COUNT"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cert-transparency is a skill published in the GitHub repository woohyun212/security-skill (21 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 1,451 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 2 findings (asks for root, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
