subdomain-enum

subdomain-enum is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from woohyun212/security-skill. It costs 18 tokens per session (1,193 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A reconnaissance guide that finds subdomains belonging to a root domain and checks which discovered hosts respond over HTTP. A subdomain is an additional web address under a main domain, such as api.example.com under example.com.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it at the start of an authorized penetration test, bug-bounty assessment, or recurring inventory audit. It uses subfinder and optionally amass, then httpx for live-host checks.
Why use it?
It combines results from several discovery sources, removes duplicates, and verifies live hosts, giving security testers a more complete view of a domain's exposed systems.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00018 $0.01193
Opus 5 $0.00009 $0.00596
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00239
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00119

Security

Grade A, and why

subdomain-enum scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What this skill does

Enumerates subdomains of a target domain using subfinder and amass. Collects results from multiple sources (Certificate Transparency, DNS brute-force, passive databases, etc.), merges and deduplicates them, then validates live hosts using httpx.

When to use

  • During the initial reconnaissance phase of a penetration test to map the attack surface
  • When defining the scope for a bug bounty target
  • When periodically auditing an organization's exposed subdomain inventory

Prerequisites

  • Go 1.21 or later installed
  • Install subfinder:
    go install -v github.com/projectdiscovery/subfinder/v2/cmd/subfinder@latest

  • Install amass (optional):
    go install -v github.com/owasp-amass/amass/v4/...@master

  • Install httpx (for live host validation):
    go install -v github.com/projectdiscovery/httpx/cmd/httpx@latest

  • Environment variable SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN: target domain (e.g. example.com)
  • Environment variable SECSKILL_OUTPUT_DIR: directory for saving results (default: ./output)

Inputs

Variable Required Description
SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN required Root domain to enumerate
SECSKILL_OUTPUT_DIR optional Path to save result files (default: ./output)
SECSKILL_USE_AMASS optional Set to true to also run amass (default: false)

Workflow

Step 1: Prepare environment

export TARGET="${SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN:?Set the SECSKILL_TARGET_DOMAIN environment variable}"
export OUTDIR="${SECSKILL_OUTPUT_DIR:-./output}"
mkdir -p "$OUTDIR"
echo "[*] Target domain: $TARGET"
echo "[*] Output directory: $OUTDIR"

Step 2: Run subfinder

echo "[*] Running subfinder..."
subfinder -d "$TARGET" \
  -silent \
  -o "$OUTDIR/subfinder_${TARGET}.txt"
echo "[+] subfinder complete: $(wc -l < "$OUTDIR/subfinder_${TARGET}.txt") results"

Step 3: Run amass (optional)

if [ "${SECSKILL_USE_AMASS:-false}" = "true" ]; then
echo "[*] Running amass (this may take a while)..."
  amass enum -passive -d "$TARGET" \
    -o "$OUTDIR/amass_${TARGET}.txt"
  echo "[+] amass complete: $(wc -l < "$OUTDIR/amass_${TARGET}.txt") results"
else
echo "[*] Skipping amass (enable with SECSKILL_USE_AMASS=true)"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

subdomain-enum is a skill published in the GitHub repository woohyun212/security-skill (21 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 18 tokens to every session and 1,193 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
