secret-manager

secret-manager is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from xyva-yuangui/XyvaClaw. It costs 31 tokens per session (827 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A command-line tool for storing OpenClaw API keys in your computer’s secure key storage, such as macOS Keychain or GNOME Keyring on Linux.

In plain words
What is it for?
Saving, retrieving, deleting, and listing OpenClaw API keys, then updating the related configuration.
Why use it?
It keeps keys out of ordinary configuration files and can place them into OpenClaw’s authentication configuration. On Linux, it can also update the user environment and restart the OpenClaw Gateway in Distrobox.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00031 $0.00827
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.00413
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00165
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00083

Security

Grade B, and why

secret-manager scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/check.py, secret-manager.sh), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

Secret Manager

A secure way to manage API keys for OpenClaw using the system keyring.

  • macOS: Uses Keychain Access via security command
  • Linux: Uses GNOME Keyring via secret-tool (libsecret)

This skill provides a secret-manager CLI that:

  1. Stores API keys securely in the OS keyring.
  2. Injects them into your auth-profiles.json.
  3. (Linux only) Propagates them to systemd user environment.
  4. (Linux only) Restarts the OpenClaw Gateway service inside your Distrobox container.

Installation

macOS (no extra dependencies)

macOS Keychain is built-in. No installation needed.

Linux

Ensure you have the dependencies:

  • Debian/Ubuntu: sudo apt install libsecret-tools
  • Fedora: sudo dnf install libsecret
  • Arch: sudo pacman -S libsecret

Copy the script to your path or run it directly.

macOS Usage

# Store a key
security add-generic-password -a "openclaw" -s "OPENAI_API_KEY" -w "sk-xxx" -U

# Retrieve a key
security find-generic-password -a "openclaw" -s "OPENAI_API_KEY" -w

# Delete a key
security delete-generic-password -a "openclaw" -s "OPENAI_API_KEY"

# List all OpenClaw keys
security dump-keychain | grep -A5 "openclaw"

Configuration

The script uses default paths that work for most OpenClaw installations, but you can override them with environment variables:

Variable Description Default
OPENCLAW_CONTAINER Name of the Distrobox container (Linux only) clawdbot
OPENCLAW_HOME Path to OpenClaw config directory ~/.openclaw
SECRETS_ENV_FILE Path to an optional .env file to source ~/.config/openclaw/secrets.env
KEYRING_BACKEND Force backend: keychain (macOS) or libsecret (Linux) auto-detect

Usage

List all configured keys:

secret-manager list

Set a key (interactive prompt):

secret-manager OPENAI_API_KEY
# (Paste key when prompted)

Set a key (direct):

secret-manager DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN "my-token-value"

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

It adds 31 tokens to every session and 827 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks for root).
