lesson-record

lesson-record is a skill for Claude Code from yarlson/yarstack. It costs 115 tokens per session (1,434 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for proposing reusable lessons from an agent session and recording whether they worked. An independent gate agent decides whether a proposed lesson should be accepted.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when someone says to remember something or when a session discovers a repeatable step order or a useful warning.
Why use it?
It turns corrections, successful procedures, and misleading errors into checked guidance for later sessions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00115 $0.01434
Opus 5.5 $0.00046 $0.00574
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00287
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00143

Security

Grade A, and why

lesson-record scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 124 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Record a Yarbrain Lesson

Turn what this session learned into a small lesson that a future agent can apply without this conversation. You propose; an independent gate agent decides. You never judge your own lesson.

Before anything

Run yarbrain status. Act on the result:

  • Command not found: run this plugin's launcher by its path. It is bin/yarbrain two folders above this skill's folder. Use that path in place of yarbrain in every command of this session.
  • no_vault: ask the person once where the vault should live, then run yarbrain init <path>. Apply only the setup steps whose host is the host you run in: claude-code or codex. Edit exactly the file that the step names, never a project file, and tell the person what you changed. The host may ask them to approve each edit; if they decline one, or the edit fails, tell them the step and continue.
  • Any other error: follow its fix field. Exit code 4 means retry once; the first call exits 4 after it downloads the yarbrain CLI that this plugin pins.

What qualifies

Propose a lesson only when all of these hold:

  • A later session in this project, or in any project, would act differently because of it.
  • This session verified it: the fix worked, or the user stated the rule.
  • It is not already in the README, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, or other docs. If the docs should say it, suggest that edit to the person instead.
  • It is not task status, a one-off value, or a personal preference about how agents should behave. Preferences belong in the person's agent instructions.

Propose at most 3 lessons per session that nobody asked for.

Propose

  1. Check for an existing lesson: yarbrain find <2 or 3 distinctive terms>. If a served lesson already covers it, confirm that one instead (below).

  2. Write the lesson and pass it on stdin. On Windows, write it to a temporary file and pass --input <file>.

    yarbrain propose <<'EOF'
    ---
cue: 'make seed fails with "relation users does not exist"'
    scope: here
    ---
    # Run migrations before seeding the test database

Run `make migrate` before `make seed`. The seed script assumes the schema
and reports a missing table instead of missing migrations.

    ## Observed

`make seed` failed with the error above; after `make migrate`, it passed.
    EOF

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
