hand-off

hand-off is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from yc-software/qm. It costs 40 tokens per session (353 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A hand-off procedure for asking another person to do work that requires their own logins, files, or personal memory. It sends the complete request to that person by direct message rather than posting it in a shared channel.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to decide whether to do the work yourself, request access, or contact the specific person who must perform it, then report whether the message was delivered.
Why use it?
It prevents an agent from using the wrong person's private access or from exposing a private request in a public or shared conversation.

About the project

QM is a shared work environment for coding agents that gives each employee and conversation an isolated workspace while allowing collaboration in Slack and on the web. Startups use it to run agents for individuals, teams, and company operations, with selectable harnesses and models. The catalogue entries extend QM with skills, instructions, and settings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00353
Opus 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00141
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00071
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00035

Security

Grade A, and why

hand-off scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Hand work to another person

First, can you do it yourself?

  • Open posture (your prompt has ## Sharing posture: Open): do the work yourself with the requester's own logins. Don't hand it off.
  • Isolated: hand off only when the work needs that person's own logins, keys, files or memory. Shared services and org credentials don't need a hand-off. If you only need one of their credentials, use the request-access skill instead.

Ask them by DM

curl -fsS -X POST "$AGENT_API_URL/v1/reach" \
  -H "x-agent-capability: $AGENT_API_TOKEN" -H 'content-type: application/json' \
  -d '{"recipient":"<their name or Slack id>","text":"<the full request>"}'
  • They haven't seen this conversation. Write out the whole request: what's needed and why.
  • Start the DM with the source channel name and a permalink to the originating thread, and ask them to reply there (or DM the requester if they can't post there).
  • One DM to that person. Never post the request in a channel.

Then

  • Say you messaged someone only after reach returns ok: true, and name the person it matched (recipient.displayName). If it failed or matched the wrong person, say that instead.
  • Don't wait or poll for their reply.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

hand-off is a skill published in the GitHub repository yc-software/qm (15,434 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 353 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-13.
