wick-zero-downtime-upgrade

wick-zero-downtime-upgrade is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from yogasw/wick. It costs 0 tokens per session (8,721 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A deployment skill for replacing a running Wick program without closing its listening network port. It explains the difference between a reload, where a successor starts before the old process exits, and a restart, where service stops first.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when upgrading Wick, investigating downtime during an update, or handling failed reloads and overlapping processes. It covers the required opt-in setting and supported operating systems.
Why use it?
A normal restart can refuse requests and interrupt active work while the new process starts. A graceful reload keeps the old process serving until the replacement is ready, where the operating system supports it.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: mentions subagents; positional $N argument; mentions Codex.

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is if wick build && support-tools reload --binary ./bin/... --sudo -y; then.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.08721
Opus 5.5 $0.00000 $0.03488
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00000 $0.01744
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00872

Security

Grade B, and why

wick-zero-downtime-upgrade scanned grade B with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 17d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 363 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Upgrading wick without downtime

Wick can replace its own binary while it is serving: a successor process starts, inherits the listening socket, and the old process keeps working until it is finished. The port is never closed, so nothing in front of wick (nginx, a load balancer, a browser) ever sees a refused connection.

That is reload. It is not the same as restart, and the difference is the whole point:

  • restart — stop, then start. The port is closed for the successor's entire boot (tens of seconds on a loaded host: registry restore, database, connectors), so requests fail for that window, and every in-flight agent turn, workflow run and cron job is killed mid-work.
  • reload — the successor boots while the old process keeps serving, takes over the socket when it is ready, and only then does the old one wind down.

Turning it on

Graceful upgrade is opt-in, because it changes how the process exits:

WICK_GRACEFUL_UPGRADE=1

Without it, SIGHUP is logged and ignored (better than Go's default, which is to terminate), and reload tells you to use restart instead.

Supported where descriptor passing exists — Linux, macOS, BSD — running as a plain daemon or under a service manager. On Windows, and when wick runs inside the tray's in-process supervisor, there is no way to hand a socket to another process: the upgrader degrades to a normal listener and you get the classic stop/start. Nothing needs a build tag or a different command; the same reload just reports that it is unavailable.

Under systemd

A handover means the process systemd forked exits while a different process keeps serving. systemd has to be told to follow the new one, or it treats the parent's exit as the service dying and kills the whole cgroup — taking the fresh process with it. Four lines do that:

[Service]
Type=notify
NotifyAccess=all
TimeoutStartSec=infinity
ExecStart=/usr/bin/<app> all
ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
Environment="WICK_GRACEFUL_UPGRADE=1"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

wick-zero-downtime-upgrade is a skill published in the GitHub repository yogasw/wick (3 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 8,721 tokens. A static security scan graded it B with 2 findings (asks for root, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-11.
